Growing up half Vietnamese, I have a deep appreciation for the amount of delicious Viet food options in OC. This guide explores Vietnamese food beyond just pho and banh mi. We'll try grilled scallops, spring rolls, meat buns, egg coffee, desserts and more. Note: This guide is a little pricey because many of the spots and their specialties were recommended by word of mouth. Every recommendation on this list has been vetted by me and my family, who have a pretty high bar for Vietnamese food.

For most of the destinations, if you prefer, you can switch the night bus with a flight or private car. IS VIETNAM SAFE? Absolutely yes. Vietnam is a pretty safe country, like all the countries of South East Asia in general. People are very friendly and they will always try to help you in every way they can. It's actually a very common destination for solo female travelers NB this is not a PDF but an interactive guide which means that when you click on a place in the guide or map, you can directly open directions on your phone's Google Maps app, call restaurants or book hotels. This is a map of all the places I went to on my 3 month backpacking trip. We flew into Bangkok then island hopped in south Thailand for 2 weeks before flying up to Chiang Mai to explore north Thailand for 2 weeks. Next stop was northern Laos for just over 2 weeks where we got the slow boat from Thailand to Luang Prabang. After Laos was an overnight bus to Hanoi in northern Vietnam where we worked our way down to the south over 3 weeks. Finally finishing in Cambodia for 3 weeks and then bus back to Bangkok to fly home. This map includes recommendations of things to do, places to stay and restaurant recommendations too. I have added in information about the visas, currency, how to get around and important tips and tricks we learnt along the way. You can fit in a lot less than you think when backpacking so this is a realistic map of what is achievable in 3 months. For example, food in the North, Hanoi is comparably lighter and less intense than the food in the South.
