Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones you don’t plan for. I recently found myself in Sarajevo, a city I hadn’t originally intended to visit, and I was completely enchanted by its charm. Sarajevo isn’t just a city; it’s a living history book, brimming with tales of triumph and turmoil. This crossroads of civilizations has seen it all, from Ottoman grandeur to 20th-century struggles. You can’t walk its streets without feeling the weight of its past.
• The 1914 Assassination: Sarajevo made headlines worldwide when Gavrilo Princip’s fateful shot at Archduke Franz Ferdinand set off World War I. It’s a defining moment etched into the city’s story.
• Ottoman Legacy: Stroll through Sarajevo and you’ll see the influence of the Ottomans in its mosques, old bazaars, and unique blend of cultures. It’s a city that wears its history on its sleeve.
• The 1990s Siege: The city’s scars from the Bosnian War are still visible, but so is its spirit of recovery. The resilience and hope in Sarajevo’s ongoing rebuild reflect its unbreakable character. Sarajevo is buzzing with excitement for its future.
The city is embracing growth and modernization while retaining its warm, welcoming spirit. With new businesses, cultural events, and vibrant community life, Sarajevo is evolving into a must-visit destination. The local people are incredibly friendly, making every visitor feel at home. As Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to develop, Sarajevo stands as a beacon of optimism and charm, promising an enriching experience for everyone who comes to explore.

Most of my travels I did as a solo female traveller. And hostels were often the best option - cheap, safe, great places to meet another traveller.

Ever since finishing university 3 years ago, I have been full time travelling and volunteering for conservation projects. I absolutely love my lifestyle however can't lie tight budget is one of the downsides. Instead of giving up my travel dreams I just decided to become resourceful and find the perfect itineraries that still fit my tight budget and let me explore the world. Before every trip, I spend weeks planning and researching and it's one of my favourite parts of the adventure. However, I know it can be overwhelming and tedious at times so I decided to share my research and my itinerary with you. All places mentioned here are places where I have been/stayed/eaten myself and can give you an honest review.
In this guide, you'll find an itinerary through the Balkans meant to take you through 6 countries throughout 26 days following my footsteps. I'll share with you my recommendations of where to stay and what to do as well as a detailed outline of the full cost (accommodation and transport). You'll also find links to the accommodations I stayed in and all the bus/train companies I used. You'll also find a spreadsheet so you can adjust the itinerary to your own needs.

✔️Budget for the whole trip for accommodation and transport (updated November 23)
✔️Recommendations of budget accommodation in each location
✔️Recommendations of activities in each location
✔️Researched public transport connections between each location
✔️Ideas of day trips from the location (with budget expectations)
