Sarajevo -Bosnia and Herzegovina- A MUST VISIT!

Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones you don’t plan for. I recently found myself in Sarajevo, a city I hadn’t originally intended to visit, and I was completely enchanted by its charm. Sarajevo isn’t just a city; it’s a living history book, brimming with tales of triumph and turmoil. This crossroads of civilizations has seen it all, from Ottoman grandeur to 20th-century struggles. You can’t walk its streets without feeling the weight of its past. • The 1914 Assassination: Sarajevo made headlines worldwide when Gavrilo Princip’s fateful shot at Archduke Franz Ferdinand set off World War I. It’s a defining moment etched into the city’s story. • Ottoman Legacy: Stroll through Sarajevo and you’ll see the influence of the Ottomans in its mosques, old bazaars, and unique blend of cultures. It’s a city that wears its history on its sleeve. • The 1990s Siege: The city’s scars from the Bosnian War are still visible, but so is its spirit of recovery. The resilience and hope in Sarajevo’s ongoing rebuild reflect its unbreakable character. Sarajevo is buzzing with excitement for its future. The city is embracing growth and modernization while retaining its warm, welcoming spirit. With new businesses, cultural events, and vibrant community life, Sarajevo is evolving into a must-visit destination. The local people are incredibly friendly, making every visitor feel at home. As Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to develop, Sarajevo stands as a beacon of optimism and charm, promising an enriching experience for everyone who comes to explore.

Sarajevo’s rich past stretches from its Ottoman era, where it thrived as a cultural crossroads, to its role in igniting World War I with the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The city also bore the scars of the 1990s conflict, which reshaped it profoundly. Despite these challenges, Sarajevo has always demonstrated remarkable resilience and spirit Today, Sarajevo is a city on the rise, embracing a future filled with hope and innovation. It combines historical charm with a contemporary outlook, offering a welcoming atmosphere to both locals and visitors. The city’s ongoing revitalization reflects its commitment to growth while preserving its unique cultural heritage.

Restaurants and Bars

Sarajevo’s food scene is a delightful fusion of tradition and innovation over the years of ruling countries. One thing is for sure the classic Bosnian dishes like ćevapi—grilled minced meat served with flatbread and onions, and burek—flaky pastry filled with savoury goodness. For a modern twist, explore trendy bistros offering everything from gourmet burgers to artisanal pizzas. (probs not a great city for vego;s but it possible, you just have to look a little deeper)

As night falls, the city’s bar scene buzzes with energy. Cozy cafes serve up strong Bosnian coffee, while lively bars offer everything from local craft beers to rakija, a potent brandy. Don’t miss the historic Baščaršija district, where traditional tea houses and vibrant bars showcase Sarajevo’s unique charm. (The old town is promptly Muslim so a little harder to find a drink) But if you want to experience local life it's the ideal location. Further out of the city centre is a range of food and drink options that appeal to a range of tastes.

On a busy corner in the old town, this place is busy all day and night, the staff (women only) are really friendly! The food is authentic and well-priced burek is the best in this place and they have meat, cheese and spinach as well as a few other things, I didn't have the dessert but really wanted it, its kind of pastry cooked with honey and great with a coffee... must go it's great!
