"The cathedral, located near a Roman temple, began construction in 1107 but was delayed until a raft with the icon of the Madonna provided beams in 1117. It was completed and consecrated in 1442, enduring damage over the years that led to a Baroque refurbishment finished in 1772. In 1921, it was designated a minor basilica, and later became a co-cathedral in 1986. The cathedral is notable for its artistic features, including decorations and paintings associated with the icon of Our Lady of Madia."
"Monopoli's main cathedral. The story is that Madonna della Madia arrived by sea in the 12 century with enough wooden beams that allowed the city to finish building the church, so they dedicated it to her! The current church isn’t the wooden one, but it shares the location and name. "

"The honey-coloured stonework on the facade is beautiful and intricate, The courtyard is really picturesque and peaceful with olive trees dotted around the perimeter"
