"Conceived and built by Filippo Juvarra in 1717-1731, it is dedicated to the Nativity of Mary and houses the tombs of the House of Savoy.
According to tradition, it was built by the will of Vittorio Amedeo II to fulfill a vow after the 1706 victory over the French. The choice of the place, visually connected to the palace of Rivoli, had to underline the royal dignity of the House of Savoy acquired after the Treaty of Utrecht (1713).
The church, with a circular plan, is dominated by the 75-metre-high dome and flanked by two 60-metre-high bell towers. An imposing pronaos with eight Corinthian columns precedes the facade. Inside, the stucco decoration and the marble of the altars and the floor create spectacular light effects. The main altar, whose frame was designed by Filippo Juvarra, is enriched by a marble bas-relief by Bernardino Cametti which recalls the glorious battle for the liberation of Turin.
Paintings and sculptures by Beaumont, Sebastiano Ricci, Carlo Antonio Tantardini, Bernardino Cametti and Agostino Cornacchini decorate the side chapels."

"The basillica in Superga is breathtaking. It is most easily accessable by taxi, but you can also take a bus to the tram that takes you up the hill, but can be pricey. Most effective way would be to take a taxi up the hill to the Basillica. Enjoy the breathtaking views of Turin while pearched above the city, and explore inside the Basillica as well. After exploring, walk down the main hill road 2 minutes to CHEERS, which is a fun spot to eat at and have aperitivo or just drinks. It is not very expensive and has amazing views!"
