Nicknamed the Land of Fire and Ice because of its many volcanoes and glaciers, there are endless opportunities of gorgeous natural wonders to explore. Over 60% of the people that live in Iceland, live in the capital city of Reykjavik.

If you are not renting a car to avoid the intimidation of the slippery roads during winter, all of the activities below can be done right in Reykjavik or by a tour with transfer. The Golden Circle is a 300km loop in Southern Iceland. I know it may sound daunting, especially if you are on a tight schedule to squeeze everything in. How to explore Iceland 🇮🇸 the best in a 3-4 day exploration !

Had the opportunity to travel to Iceland during 2 different time periods (August & December). Each time was very unique with the simple fact of daylight. Here is a full list of things to do , eat & stay while in Iceland. 

August Visit: Average Daylight in Iceland 16 hours.

December Visit: Average Daylight in Iceland 5-6 hours.

When planning your trip to Iceland be cautious of daylight especially when planning excursions or things to do. 

Note: 

Mid May to Mid August: 16 hours of daylight

September to Beginning May: 4-5 hours of daylight

SKIP the guides about the Golden Circle unless you're committed to staying in Reykjavic and only venturing out for a day. This guide has the highlights and agenda to do it all along the Southern Coast in just 3-4 days. (I recommend renting a Tesla and using the superchargers along the way to save time.) 

Maximize your time by seeing all of the South Coast plus a "secret" island where they have re-homed Beluga Whales. Highly recommend going all the way to Jökulsárlón, which was THE surprising highlight of my trip.

Gullfoss Waterfall lookout

Gullfoss Waterfall was perhaps the most impressive natural wonder I laid eyes on in Iceland. It reminded me of my visit to Niagara Falls in the United States, the way the powerful water poured over the edge like a wedding veil. If you stop here during winter, I highly recommend bundling up because the wind can get extremely harsh. In addition to this, make sure you have crampons as the path was very slippery and hard to navigate once the wind joined the party.

Gullfoss Waterfall, located in the canyon of the Hvítá River, is a stunning natural attraction where the river plunges in two stages, first dropping 11 meters (36 feet) and then 21 meters (69 feet) into a deep crevice. This majestic waterfall is renowned for its powerful flow, dramatic scenery, and the mist that often creates beautiful rainbows.
