Praia Formosa

"Located west of the centre of Funchal, in the parish of São Martinho, we find the largest public beach in Madeira. Praia Formosa – which is actually a complex of four beaches – is just a 10-minute drive from the city centre and is one of the busiest bathing areas in the entire region. A combination of pebbles and black sand, its area stretches for 2 kilometres, attracting hundreds of bathers every day, including residents and tourists. Praia Formosa is both an option for spending the whole day and a refuge for a quick dip after hours of walking and exploring the island. And how good will it be to exercise your body in our waters, when you can then enjoy a beer or a poncha in the adjacent bars, while the last rays of the sun dry your skin. On this public beach, with free access, the safety of bathers during the bathing season is guaranteed by a team of lifeguards. There are also several support infrastructures that ensure a well-spent day at the beach, such as parking, changing rooms, an aid station, a children's playground and a football pitch."
