"Poas is a volcano with several eroded calderas, cones, and two crater lakes near its summit. Poas has erupted at least 39 times since 1828 and is in state of nearly continuous mild activity. Most of the eruptions are phreatic, caused by the interaction of lava and the water in the crater lake
If the gas levels are too high at the crater, they will close the viewpoint or even close the entire national park if they detect high gas levels or high volcanic activity. This is unpredictable but it may occur. You need around 2 hours at Poas Volcano if you want to walk both trails. "

"If you have time visit one of the world's largest active volcanoes in Alajuela province, about a 1.5-hour drive from San Jose. Tickets need to be purchased in advance online, and visitor groups depart every 20 minutes from the entrance. It is a 45-minute guided tour. The views depend on the weather and volcano activity but there is no refund if your view is blocked by clouds. Tours can be scheduled between 7 am and 2 pm, every day including weekends and holidays."

"Today you will be taking a day trip to Poás Volcano National Park. Wake up a little earlier to make sure you arrive before the clouds roll in. I would recommend visiting at around 9am. You must book these tickets ahead of time on the SINAC website. Once you’ve finished this stunning day trip, head back to San José to get some rest before you make you’re way to La Fortuna the next day. "
