🌋 La Fortuna / Arenal

If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would still choose to spend an entire week in La Fortuna because this small town embodied everything I craved in a visit to Costa Rica. Leaving this place felt like leaving a piece of home behind, something I have never felt in all of my travels.

La Fortuna has the perfect fusion of relaxing activities and action-packed adventures, with each day giving you the opportunity to either laze around like the native sloths or catch a birds-eye view of the rainforest through exhilarating activities!

Here’s a list of all the things I recommend in the area:

Hotels:

Nayara Gardens
@taylorblair
Nayara Hotel and Gardens is located near the Arenal Volcano in the northern lowlands of Costa Rica. The hotel is one of the most luxurious in the entire region, and offers easy access to the region’s best activities. This is where I personally stayed during my week in La Fortuna and offered hands down the best resort experience I've ever had.

Food:

The Corner Restaurant
@taylorblair
This was one of my favorite dinner spots in La Fortuna due to its amazing food, fun atmosphere, energetic staff, and STRONG cocktails! Not to mention it's located in the heart of town close to all of the good bars! If you're looking for food and a party--- this is the place! I also went one day for breakfast and had a generous acai bowl with fresh fruit. They also serve crepes, traditional Costa Rican breakfast as well as some American options.

Soda la Hormiga
@taylorblair
It’s an open-air concept- you’ll arrive to seat yourself and order off the large menu on the wall. Service is great, the food is traditional Costa Rican and super super cheap! This is probably the cheapest place to eat in La Fortuna. Located next to the Mega Super right downtown, with its own small parking lot. I highly recommend the fruit salad!

Nice place, greatfood, with insta worthy drinks! We all got the skirt steak and it came out on fuego, literally! Really enjoyed and would recommend if you're looking for the best steak in la fortuna. We also got the tres leches cake for dessert, it did not disappoint!

Hot Springs:

El Choyin
@taylorblair
If you save anything from this guide let it be THIS! La Fortuna is best known for its pricey luxury resorts featuring natural hot springs heated by the nearby Arenal Volcano. But did you know this not-so-secret local favorite is completely natural and the best part--- ABSOLUTELY FREE! To get there, go to the yellow gate next to Tabacon Springs. You can park on the road shoulder and you will see signs that say "El Choyin". Walk down the path behind the gate and in a very short walk you will arrive at a bubbling hot creek. You can go 24 hrs a day but keep your items in your site. Leave your valuables at your hotel and just bring a towel and prepare to relax! TIP: I highly recommend going at night and grabbing a few candle sticks (I found some at a nearby gas station) not only is there less crowds but the candle lit hot springs is an experience you can't miss!

Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa
@taylorblair
Tabacón is great for adults or couples looking for a romantic, quiet, and luxurious experience but children of all ages are also permitted. On the other hand, if you’re hoping for a child-free experience, Tabacón has an adults-only section, the Shangri-La Garden! This springs rates #2 on my list for its eco-friendly and carbon-neutral methods. Gravity completely powers the hot springs—no pumps or mechanical systems move or heat the water! As a result, the pools look like a river and the baths consist of natural rocks providing a relaxing natural spa like experience! - Price: $75 - $125 - 20 in-river pools (some feel secluded) - Coldwater pool - Main large pool with a swim-up bar and waterslides - Pool temperatures range from 72ºF – 105ºF - Towel and locker rental (additional fee) - Spa (additional fee) - Open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Baldi Hot Springs Resort Hotel & Spa
@taylorblair
Baldi Hot Springs is one of the largest thermal pools in the area and also the most commercialized. It’s a great option for budget-conscious families and social groups, offering various pools and several sources of entertainment. Baldi is great if you’re looking for a lively atmosphere instead of a quiet, relaxing experience! Families with active children will especially love the kids’ play zone with small waterslides—including a “bowl” slide that adults can also enjoy—plus interactive water features and games. Day passes can include meals in the buffet restaurant, but general admission into the pools is also available. If you’re interested in staying onsite, Baldi offers comfortable rooms with mid-range rates plus hotel guests get full access to the hot springs.  - Price: $40 - $80 - 25 pools - A kids’ play zone - Four waterslides - A large jacuzzi that can fit up to 60 people - Pool temperatures range from 93°F – 152°F - Three swim-up bars - Two restaurants (one buffet, one a-la-carte) - Towel and locker rental (additional fee) - Spa (additional fee) - Open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. - Reservations recommended

Arenal Volcano Hike -

Arenal Volcano View and Lava Trails
@taylorblair
Although the Arenal Volcano has entered an indefinite resting phase, you can’t get too close for safety reasons (toxic gas and hot steam). Still, numerous hikes lead you around the volcano’s base, through its lava fields, and into the surrounding rainforest. Three main venues offer this bucket-list experience: - Arenal Volcano National Park - Arenal 1968 Private Reserve - Arenal Observatory Lodge and Spa I recommend a guided hike which is sure to elevate your experience. Local and knowledgeable guides are trained to spot native wildlife, detail the 1968 eruption, highlight the regional flora and fauna, and lead the way through the trails. Plus, many guided experiences include transportation to and from the trailhead!

La Fortuna Waterfall-

Fortuna Waterfall
@taylorblair
Arguably the most visited waterfall in the whole country, La Fortuna waterfall is a must see while in the area. Dropping 246 feet into a crisp turquoise blue pool, this waterfall is only ~4 miles outside of town which makes for a great half day trip!  You can drive or take a red taxi to the waterfall park. A taxi one way from downtown costs around $15 USD. The entrance fee is $18 USD for adult foreigners and $5 USD for children. Each guest needs to purchase a ticket to the waterfall park. - Open 7 AM to 5:00 PM - Over 500 steps down to the waterfall - You can swim weather permitting - There are facilities where you can change clothes - Wear good water shoes

El Salto Swimming Hole-

El Salto - RĂo Fortuna
@taylorblair
Not much comes for free in La Fortuna, but this local favorite swimming hole "El Salto" provides the perfect place to relax on the rocks, watch brave souls dive into the water, and people-watch the very eclectic mix of culture here. It’s located about 1 mile south of the downtown area along Road 702, right under the bridge pictured above. There’s room for a handful of cars on either side of the bridge and usually an “unofficial” parking attendant by one of the parking sections who will watch your car for a few colones. I recommend bringing your bathing suit, water shoes, towels, food & drinks, cash and a dry bag with you. Important to note there’s no changing rooms, bathrooms, or facilities of any kind here– so plan accordingly and wear your bathing suit under your clothes!

@taylorblair
Experience one of the most breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano on a stand-up paddle boarding adventure on Lake Arenal! You'll start the day by meeting a guide at the designated location and heading to the dock, where a boat will take you to the center of the lake! One of the highlights of this experience is getting up close and personal with Arenal Volcano. Paddle to a certain point in the middle of the lake, and the volcano will come into full view. You'll be able to see the detailed textures of the volcano's rock formations, and it's an incredible feeling to be so close to such a powerful natural wonder. 🏝️ Manuel Antonio/Quepos

If heaven was a place on Earth I'm convinced it would look a lot like the little town of Manuel Antonio. From the white sand beaches, diverse wildlife and rich culture-- this region truly has something for everyone! Whether you want to relax all day or adventure until sunset, Manuel Antonio will NOT disappoint! Here are all of my favorite spots you have to visit while in the area:

Hotels:

Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort
@taylorblair
This is where I stayed during my time in Manuel Antonio. It's located on hillsides sloping down to two pristine, almost-deserted beaches, the chic and elegant rooms are decorated with gorgeous natural fabrics and local art and have huge private terraces with comfortable outdoor seating. From the base of the hill, guests are transported by electric golf cart up winding pathways to the carbon-neutral property. Rooms have fully stocked "Tico minibars" with complimentary local snacks and beverages. Bathrooms are spacious, with round, glass-brick shower stalls, and suites have mosaic-tiled hot tubs on their terraces. Amenities include two pools and a spa, free yoga and exercise classes, and the surrounding forest is alive with wildlife. It's not uncommon to be visited by a monkey at your breakfast table. The main restaurant is practically in the trees, and the menu is innovative and ambitious, and includes some popular gluten-free dishes. There's also a more casual daytime restaurant at the lower pool nearest the beach. The hotel offers free tortilla-making classes, nature hikes, and sustainability tours that give a behind-the-scenes look at how this five-star resort earned the five-leaves award for its green practices.

Gaia
@taylorblair
On 13 acres of private reserve, this boutique hotel is contemporary and very chic, with rooms rendered in slate, hardwood, and rattan with Italian fittings. Elegance abounds with soft hues of cream and white and pampering extras like 500-thread-count Egyptian-cotton bed linens and Turkish robes. Jacuzzi tubs and (shared) rooftop sundecks encourage relaxation, as does the Terra Spa complete with a Vichy rain shower, mud room, sauna, hair salon, and six treatment rooms. Higher room categories include a complimentary mini-spa treatment with direct booking. Three white buildings house the rooms, which are surprisingly spacious—the smallest is 350 square feet. Wildlife tours of the preserve take place daily at 3:30, and beach transportation is offered hourly from 7:30 to 4. The hotel’s La Luna Restaurant has an excellent tapas menu from 4 to 6 and sweeping sunset views, earning it a reputation as one of the best restaurants in Manuel Antonio.

Final boarding call for... a table for two! This is not your typical restaurant ambiance, nor is it your typical building! El Avion is built into and around an actual, real, historical airplane! Just behind the original location is a new and improved venue where a spectacular sunset view comes with friendly, attentive service and a tempting menu that includes such typical tico dishes as sopa negra (black-bean soup), ceviche, shrimp and fish on a skewer, and filet mignon wrapped with bacon and topped with a mushroom sauce. Up a long dirt road, this is the best place in town to soak in the ocean views—especially when accompanied by a glass of their famous white-wine-and-vodka sangria.

There’s no better place to start the day than Emilio’s Café, a bakery with fabulous bagels and a range of pastries. But you might also want to stop here for lunch, because the salads are bursting with flavor, as are the sandwiches, made with house-baked ciabatta bread. For dinner, there’s fresh fish, thick steaks, and nightly specials. You could dine here three times a day and come away satisfied—Emilio’s is that good. The hillside is so steep the dining rooms are terraced (hence the name) and spread over three floors connected by steep steps. Food Truck "En Todas"
@taylorblair
This food truck quickly became my absolute favourite spot in the area, and I couldn’t resist going back multiple times during my stay. The first thing that caught my eye was the unique setup. This gem is housed inside an old American-style school bus, which adds to its quirky charm. You can enjoy your meal at the inviting picnic tables outside, with the beach on one side and the lush jungle on the other. What makes this place truly special is its location. it’s nestled right by the beach and surrounded by lush jungle. The result? You’re sharing your meal with curious iguanas and the soothing sounds of the waves. It’s a real treat for nature lovers. Not only is it incredibly affordable, but the portion sizes are also very generous. You’ll find a mouthwatering selection of dishes, including some delicious traditional Costa Rican cuisine. This spot is easily the best soda Manuel Antonio!

Beaches:

Manuel Antonio Beach
@taylorblair
Located in Manuel Antonio National Park, this is one of the most popular beaches in Manuel Antonio. Its soft white sand and gentle waves make perfect conditions for swimming and snorkeling, thanks to the offshore rocks that shelter its cove. There aren’t any places to rent snorkel equipment here, so pick up a rental while you’re in town or bring along your own from home! Because you need to purchase one of the limited entrance tickets to get into the park, the beaches inside Manuel Antonio National Park tend to be quieter and more serene than those outside of the park. That being said, Playa Manuel Antonio is the main beach that visitors stop at and can get quite crowded- so if you’d like to enjoy those swaying palm trees all to yourself, I’d suggest getting here early! TIP: keep an eye on your belongings, the monkeys are known to go through your bags looking for food!

Espadilla South Beach
@taylorblair
Also located inside the National Park, Espadilla Sur is located on the northern shore of Punta Cathedral, a rocky peninsula covered with dense forest, while Playa Manuel Antonio is on its other side. To get here, you’ll hike 1 mile along the same path you took to get to Playa Manuel Antonio, walking approximately 0.3 miles past Manuel Antonio and taking the first right, you’ll cut across Punta Cathedral to Playa Espadilla Sur. This place is STUNNING and inarguably one of the best beaches in Costa Rica. This crescent-shaped beach has super calm waves, so it’s family-friendly and a great place to swim or snorkel (although the water around the national park does not have the best visibility)

Espadilla Beach
@taylorblair
This beach is looooong, with most of the teeny town of Manuel Antonio overlooking its shores. While you can theoretically just drive up to Playa Espadilla, parking can be a bit of a challenge. While there’s a few paid lots you can park in, there's a hidden free parking lot by the Igloo Beach Lodge. You will find everything here-- beach bars, restrooms, showers, gear rental, places to book tours or lessons, and vendors selling everything from coconuts to margaritas in a bag! All of the locals come here to watch the sunset and once you do you'll understand why!

Biesanz Beach
@taylorblair
You can park for the beach along this street– word of warning, there will likely be a guy, wearing a safety vest, enthusiastically helping you park and then asking for a tip of a few dollars in exchange for watching your car while you’re at the beach. This happens ALL over touristy spots in Costa Rica- given it’s such a nominal fee and all of the parking “security guards” we met were super nice, it didn’t bother me too much (I’d rather my car not get broken into!) Once you’ve parked, you’ll hike about 10 minutes down a rocky path through the forest to the beach shore. Given the uneven terrain you’ll have to hike down (and back up!), this is another one I’d strongly recommend wearing hiking sandals. You can find a few amenities here, like bathrooms, a beach bar, and snorkeling and kayaking rentals!

Playa La Macha
@taylorblair
This one’s an adventure! Drive to the Bongo Hostel, located on the northern portion of Manuel Antonio- there’s a small parking lot nearby where you can leave your car. Alternatively, if you have a 4×4 car, you can drive a bit further to the official trailhead (there will be a sign indicating that you can’t drive any further), which will save you about 10 minutes of walking. I’d avoid the dirt road if it’s recently rained- it unfortunately turns into a “muddy pit of death” road. From here, you’ll hike about 20 or so minutes down through dense jungle until you reach the shore. The trail can be quite rocky and muddy- I’d strongly recommend wearing hiking / water shoes. (My chacos were by BFF on this trip) This place is truly private. I went here twice and didn't see a soul the entire time. If you're looking for your own little slice of heaven-- this is it!

Dominical
@taylorblair
This place is "pura vida" in every sense of the word. Dominical is a small, chill beach town where you will see many tourists, backpackers, surfers walking or riding their bikes around, families playing at the beach and dogs roaming the streets. You will find thick jungle, uncluttered beaches, and just enough amenities to make you feel comfortable. There is one fairly short road leading through town. Restaurants, shops, and other businesses are clustered in a few spots along the paved street. From the river mouth sandbar going south, Dominical Beach is a rocky beach with powerful waves. Though not great for swimming, the beach is home to massive palm trees, perfect for lounging. While sipping coconut water, you can watch skilled surfers take on the waves! Although this isn't the most luxurious beach in the area, the culture here is what draws people in.

Local vendors have set up within the palm trees selling food, drinks, and shaved ice treats. They also rent chairs and shade canopies.

YOU CANNOT MISS Manuel Antonio National Park on your trip! Here are some things you should know: Entrance tickets cost $16 USD. make sure to buy your ticket in advance (they only sell 1,200 a day) and arrive early, this place can get crowded! Parking costs 4000 colones but BEWARE of people dressed as park officials telling you to park at the 'official' entrance even though the park is a mile away!! JUST KEEP DRIVING until you see the entrance to the park— there will be plenty of parking there! I recommend booking a tour guide if you want to learn and get a closer look at the wildlife or do a self-guided tour if you want more flexibility to explore different spots by yourself! The park is famous for its four white sandy beaches: Espadilla Sur, Manuel Antonio, Escondido, and Playita. 🏙️ San José / Baios del Toro

More than likely, you will fly in and out of San José Airport when you visit Costa Rica. I recommend planning this stop at the end of your trip itinerary. It's a beautiful city but isn’t my favorite spot to visit. I usually tell people to use this location as your "travel hub" where you can sleep off jet lag or spend your last few days exploring the culture while being in close proximity to the airport.

I personally rented a car at the airport and made my way North towards La Fortuna, first stopping in the tiny, rural, cloud forrest town Bajos del Toro. I highly recommend doing my Full-Day Waterfall Itinerary below when you are passing through.

That said, there are still lots of things to keep you busy here. The city has some great museums, cool parks, funky hotels, and some delicious restaurants. Here are a few of my favorite spots:

Hotels:

Studio Hotel
@taylorblair
Studio Hotel had so many highlights it's had to narrow them down. I decided to spent my last few nights in town here and I would do it all over again. The rooftop pool was the perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring the city. Not to mention every floor (even your room) displays world class art adding a twist of modern flare. Just a short drive from the airport, this boutique hotel is a must if you want to stay in the Santa Ana area.

Food:

Soda La Parada
@taylorblair
Soda La Parada has an expansive menu of over 100 items. La Parada is named because it’s in front of the bus stop in the center of town, right on the southeast corner of the park. Soda La Parada is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is as much a restaurant as it is a gathering place for locals as they wait for the bus. It’s a truly authentic culinary and cultural experience. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a beer and cocktail list, excellent casados, and great pizzas, there is something for everyone on the menu. This restaurant is one of the cheapest in town, and they will make food to order: for kids, vegan options, vegetarian options, and more. Just ask!

JardĂn de Lolita
@taylorblair
Jardin de Lolita, or Lolita’s Garden, as it’s translated is another market where you can find a variety of restaurant stands with quite a bit of centralized outdoor and semi-outdoor seating. Burgers, sushi, fish and chips, drinks, and other kinds of street food are all local favorites, especially when visiting with groups of friends or family.

Restaurante Silvestre
@taylorblair
Old Buildings in San José have a magic like no other and that’s what draws visitors to Restaurante Silvestre. Located in the heart of the city, in Barrio Amón, Silvestre is an old building made anew and transformed into a contemporary restaurant. The culture of Costa Rica is on display with every bite thanks to a menu that specializes in traditional seasonal flavors with an edgy take.

Feria Verde
@taylorblair
(Green Fair) is a farmer’s market open on Saturday mornings. The market was created by local producers to bring together people from different walks of life to sell locally made food, organic products and promote cultural diversity through events and arts. I recommend stopping by and purchasing a fresh empanada, fruit or produce grown locally in the area.

Growing up, I absolutely loved the farmers market in my hometown so I was excited to see what Costa Rican farmers markets were like and I was not disappointed. It was so much fun to wander around the many stalls to see all the exotic fruits and watch the locals go about their normal daily lives. I highly recommend finding out if there is a local feria near where you’re staying and visiting one day if you’re interested in learning about Costa Rican culture and local life.

Parks-

Parque Central de San José
@taylorblair
Central Park is located in the downtown area. The location for many local events, including big holiday celebrations. Parque Central is also used by many people as a landmark on the way to various areas of the city. For example, someone could refer you to east of Parque Central if you were looking for affordable accommodations, including quite a few budget hotels. The park is also located near many of the city's popular tourist attractions including the Teatro Nacional as well as many taxis and bus routes.

Parque Diversiones

This is Costa Rica's ONLY amusement park! Not only that-- this is an adventure park with a purpose! The park's motto is "healthy children help sick children". Costa Rica´s Children´s Hospital is financed by the profits of this park!

Central Park was one of my favorite spots in San Jose. I found myself going back a second time to people watch and eat another snow cone from the friendly local vendor.

Museums -

If you're an art lover you can't miss these two gems. I spent hours taking in the rich culture and history that is displayed beautifully here on these walls.

Museum of Costa Rican Art
@taylorblair
In the heart of capital San Jose’s La Sabana Park, visitors can explore the Costa Rican Art Museum. It’s open every day except Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Getting to the museum is most convenient via bus or train. You can take either the Sabana-Cementerio bus or the Sabana-Estadio route. Via train, you’ll need to take the route that runs from San Pedro to Pavas. Your stop will be in front of the General Comptroller of the Republic in Sabana Norte. Students and those under age 18 get free admission. On Sundays, you can plan a budget-friendly visit when adult admission is free as well.

National Museum of Costa Rica
@taylorblair
The Museo Nacional de Costa Rica is located in the former Bellavista Military Barracks, an old fort where bullet holes can still be seen on the building. This makes el museo nacional a living piece of civil war history. The museum has exhibits highlighting Costa Rican natural history, anthropology, archaeology, and history. There is also a butterfly garden located in the museum. One exhibit delineates Costa Rican history in a timeline from Pre-Colombian times to the present. Another interesting exhibit shows how they transformed the fort into a museum.

Waterfall Full Day Itinerary -

If you're planning your trip from San Jose to Fa Fortuna like I did, I highly recommend taking a day to explore some of the beautiful waterfalls on your way all located around the Poas Volcano National Park!

Poas Volcano National Park
@taylorblair
Poas is a volcano with several eroded calderas, cones, and two crater lakes near its summit. Poas has erupted at least 39 times since 1828 and is in state of nearly continuous mild activity. Most of the eruptions are phreatic, caused by the interaction of lava and the water in the crater lake If the gas levels are too high at the crater, they will close the viewpoint or even close the entire national park if they detect high gas levels or high volcanic activity. This is unpredictable but it may occur. You need around 2 hours at Poas Volcano if you want to walk both trails.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens
@taylorblair
La Paz Waterfall Gardens is located about 30 miles north of San Jose (about a 90-minute drive). I recommend you set aside at least two hours to explore. It's open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission, which includes access to all the trails and attractions, costs $50 for adults and $34 for children ages 3 to 12. There is also a buffet lunch if you want to eat at the park ($14 for adults and $8 for children). For more information about the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, head to the official website listed below!

Catarata vuelta del cañon
@taylorblair
This isn’t a waterfall for the faint-hearted, and only those who are willing to work for it will be rewarded with the spectacular view! A two-tier waterfall drops feet into a canyon covered with lush greenery, with a perfectly blue pool at the bottom where you can swim. You’ll have to tackle a 6.8 mi round trip hike, involving muddy trails and river crossings, but if you love adventure this is your dream waterfall!

Tesoro Escondido Waterfall
@taylorblair
Discover this 2.1-mile out-and-back trail near Bajos del Toro, Alajuela. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 12 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are January through April. The trail begins with a parking lot and then you get directions on how to go along the forest path, which in several sections crosses the DesagĂĽe River to the Tesoro Escondido Waterfall, which has a large natural pool to dive in. The place has bathrooms and a place to buy food (you can also bring your own), so it is possible to spend the day and have a picnic!

Catarata Caida Del Cielo Finca Las Nubes
@taylorblair
This beautiful waterfall from the sky (that's what it's really called) is located in the beautiful village of Bajos del Toro. This is an incredible place to visit! I recommend taking the transportation service unless you want to hike about 2 miles to the falls. It has its complicated parts but this place is worth it! I recommend that you bring plenty of water and shoes with good grip. If I remember correctly the cost of entry is 5000 thousand colones (approx. $10)

Catarata La Turquesa
@taylorblair
This little blue waterfall is so cute and perfect for a nice swim. If you pass the La Celestial entrance, keep going north on the trail for another 100 meters. Turn right at the sign and walk through the primary forest another 75 meters slowly downhill. Turn right, make a few tiny steps into the river and walk upstream for 20 meters. Enjoy this little paradise

Blue Falls of Costa Rica
@taylorblair
The most popular falls around the country are usually home to one main waterfall, and maybe a few other small cascades or pools. But the privately owned complex of the Blue Falls is home to not one, not two, but six separate blue waterfalls! If you want to get technical there are actually more like seven or eight falls, but the sights are clustered into six different attractions. The Blue Falls of Costa Rica, and all the waterfalls in Bajos del Toro, are best visited with your own rental car. There is very limited public transport around the region, and even if you were able to reach Bajos del Toro via bus, it would be near impossible to move between the waterfalls. If you just want to visit the Blue Falls of Costa Rica, the entrance fee is $15 USD per person. However, I would highly recommend going for the combo option with Catarata del Toro, which is $25 USD per person.

Catarata del Toro
@taylorblair
This waterfall is one of the largest in Costa Rica and definitely one of the most interesting, as it flows into an extinct volcanic crater. Like a lot of waterfalls in Costa Rica, access is through private property so you have to pay to visit. The upside is that someone is maintaining the access trail and there are facilities/bathrooms and parking available. You can leave your car safely in their lot, hit the trail, and even grab some food or a drink at the on-site restaurant afterwards.

🚗 How to get around -

Buses are the most common way of getting around Costa Rica, and the public bus system is excellent, inexpensive and relatively frequent, even in remote areas. Privately run shuttle buses offer quicker but pricier transfers, while taxis are decent value for groups. I rented a car during my stay but wouldn't recommend it if you're not comfortable with driving because the conditions were quite hazardous at times.
