"Madeira Island has longed for a botanical garden since the 17th century, a dream that became a reality in 1960. Located about 3 km from the centre of Funchal, in Quinta do Bom Sucesso, which belonged to the Reid’s family, this space has the conditions to have lush vegetation.
With about 35 thousand m2, the Botanical Garden has harmonious shapes, contrasting colours and more than 2000 exotic plants. It is owned by the Regional Government of Madeira and, in addition to being a beautiful leisure space, it is also a Science and Culture Centre. Throughout the garden you can see plants with their respective identifications, which describe their scientific and common names and their origin. This garden is divided into five main areas:
There are five main areas to visit:
- Indigenous and Endemic Plants: this is the ideal place to observe plants exclusive to Madeira Island and other Atlantic islands such as the Azores, the Canary Islands and Cape Verde. This garden features around 100 indigenous species, ranging from those that grow on the island's most exposed slopes to the typical vegetation and trees that grow in Madeira's natural forest – the Laurissilva.
- Arboretum: here you will find plants from ecologically opposite parts of the world, such as plants from the Himalayas and the Topic.
- Succulents: it is their ability to store water that distinguishes these plants, most of which originate from South America.
- Tropical/Cultivars/Aromatic/Medicinal: in this area you will find several tropical and subtropical fruit trees, such as Mango, Papaya, Avocado, Coffee, Sugar Cane and also plants used for cooking or in Madeiran folk medicine."
