A Weekend in Cinque Terre, Italy

A Weekend in Cinque Terre, Italy

An Italian oasis located along the cliff side of Mediterranean Sea made up of five small towns all connected by a train. Well known for the beautiful views, rich history, delicious food & wine and stunning blue water to relax by. Make Cinque Terre your next weekend destination to explore. Also if you are huge Disney Pixar fans, many of these towns helped inspire the movie Luca. Have fun exploring the cities to see what all you recognize from the movie. Prior to visiting Cinque Terre, we didn't do much research into the area. We spent most of our time exploring and discovering along the way. This guide is to help share all of the information we gathered from our trip to help make your experience just as enjoyable.

Welcome to Cinque Terre

How to Get Here

The easiest way to arrive to Cinque Terre is by train from a larger city like Milan, Florence, Rome, Pisa, Genoa or La Spezia. Flights may be available into these cities as well, pending your desired destination.

If you are driving, we recommend booking a hotel accommodation that includes free parking on-site. It is VERY difficult to drive in the Cinque Terre towns and even harder to find any parking. If you stay outside of the main Cinque Terre cities, there is a bus line that is cheap and you can ride in each day.

Once in any of the Cinque Terre towns, you can take the train to city hop. We recommend buying a multi day pass making it easy to explore all of the cities during your stay. You can purchase this pass in any of the train stations. It runs between cities approx. every 15 minutes.

Walking Between Cities

Once you arrive to one of the five cities, there is an option to walk the National Park Trail (Blue Path Sentiero Azzurro) between each of the cities. The daily access fee is around 7.50 euros. You can purchase your pass ahead of time online or at the park information booths near the trailhead in each city. Sections of the trail may be closed due to trail maintence or recent storm damage. For the most up to date info, trail maps, and entrance fees, visit the National Park website.

When to Visit

Where to Stay

If you decide to drive to Cinque Terre, we highly recommend booking a hotel or home that has private parking included. Agriturismo spots are also great locations to check out to leave a kinder impact on the local area. We stayed just outside of town at il Borgo di Campi that included private parking for our stay. To get to Riomaggiore, there is a cheap bus to take with a stop just across the street in the hotel parking lot.

It is located on the water side of the road. This location has a TON of stairs down the cliffside (between 150-200 steps depending on where your room is located) to walk down to reach the private studios. There is NO elevator available, no staff to carry bags for you and we would not recommend booking if you have tons of luggage or cannot do stairs well. For the view, cost and parking, we felt this was the perfect spot for all of our needs.

Il Borgo di Campi
@WeekendPostcards
Open mid-April to October with a minimum of 3 night stay, these little private studios are the perfect destination for your coastal adventure. Located on the cliff side the property is beautiful and includes an outdoor solarium with hammocks to relax on, games and stunning views. We had breakfast included with our stay. There is a restaurant on the property that has some of the best food I've ever had. Highly recommend checking them out.

There are many different hotel and private apartment home accommodations available between all of the cities at different price points. We recommend finding what works best for your trip based on your desired plans and activities you'd like to do. If interested, schedule a call and we can help find specific locations that meet your budget needs.

On-Site Restaurant

Typically I can be known as a relatively picky eater, but when I tell you the food here is the best I have ever experienced, I mean it. The whole experience with a cliff side view of the water at sunset, with freshly made pasta with veggies. It was *chef's kiss* AMAZING!

The Five Towns

The Cinque Terre region is comprised of five small, cliff side towns that are all connected by a train or walking path. There is also a limited bus system that connects the towns together but this gets PACKED in the summer months. The towns are Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Manarola, Vernazza and Monteroso al Mare.

Our personal favorite of the five cities!

Since we opted for the cheap city shuttle into town from our hotel space, this is where we first arrived. The bus stop is located at the bottom of the hill near the tunnel to walk to the train station.

There was a small art market taking place in the local square. We loved getting a chance to see the local art and even picked up some to bring back home.

Little markets and other special events take place here. An art market was in full swing when we visited. Great views of the city.

Manarola

Manarola

When you see iconic photos of Cinque Terre, Manarola is often the one city that comes to mind. With the many houses tucked together on the hillside cliffs, all painted in various, bright colors, it is truly stunning to witness in person for the first time.

Corniglia

Corniglia

Be prepared for SO MANY STAIRS if you arrive here via the train. Steep incline to reach the city. Limited views of the water from the inner city spaces.

One main comment, be prepared for stairs. If you're looking to spend your time at the beach, this isn't the spot for that. However, Corniglia is home to gorgeous cliff side views and historical churches.

If you need additional assistance, or you cannot do stairs, I would recommend arriving via city bus to Corniglia. When we visited in the middle of summer, it was hot and the buses were packed. I would recommend a small pocket fan if you get hot easily.

Vernazza

Vernazza
@WeekendPostcards
Tied for our 2nd favorite of the cities. This is where we opted to swim as it wasn't as busy. There is a small beach area to easily access the water. Beware the large rocks near the edge of the water are slippery and sharp. I slipped on a rock and cut my leg here. I would recommend bringing a water shoe or sandal.

Bar Il Gabbiano

If you're hiking between Vernazza and Corniglia this is the perfect bar spot to stop at for a mid-hike drink. With great views and it's convenient location near the path, tons of travelers find themselves here.

Well known for their dazzling, white sand beaches, Monterosso al Mare is this place to visit if you love basking in the sun and dipping your toes in sparking clear blue water.

Accessibility and terrain wise, this was the easiest town to navigate of the five. The majority of the local hotels and apartments are a short, relatively flat, walk to the beach. This area has a ton of restaurants with gorgeous views of the sea side.

Alternative Nearby Towns:

La Spezia
@WeekendPostcards
If you're looking to extend your trip a few more days, La Spezia is not too far away and makes for an easy addition to your trip to the Cinque Terre Region. This is also the port hub for cruise ships.

Come along with us as we explore the area with local resident Alexandre, who I had the pleasure of spending a month with. Due to staying with a local, I did not include recommendations of where to stay. There are a variety of options from Hotels, Airbnb's, Gîtes, and camping in the surrounding area. During the high tourist season, places can book up quickly so be sure to make your accommodations in advance. --- All year round you can find activities to do in Briançon, but peek summer tourist season starts in late June, July, August, early September, and the winter tourist season begins in late December and runs until the end of March. Some activities listed in this guide are seasonal and are not open year round. Always check before booking a trip. Things to note: Briançon is located part in the valley but is full of hills and steep climbs. This is a very walkable city designed for the outdoor enthusiast, nature lover and sports participant.
