What people say

"The Castello di Riomaggiore (Riomaggiore Castle) is a historic fortress perched atop the colorful village of Riomaggiore, Italy. It's one of the Cinque Terre's most iconic landmarks, offering stunning panoramic views of the coastline and the other villages. Historical records indicate that a first defensive structure was built on the site in 1260 by the Marquises Turcotti, on the ruins of a pre-existing fortification. The Republic of Genoa then expanded and reinforced the castle during the 15th and 16th centuries, during a time of frequent pirate raids and territorial disputes. The castle has a quadrangular base with two large, round towers flanking the seaward side. Over the centuries, it has served various purposes, including a military stronghold, a lookout point, and a prison."
"A beautiful view that’s a little easier to get to is that overlooking the coast. To begin the walk, head up Via Colombo (the main street) to the Post Office where you’ll find a small staircase called Scalinata della Valle; turn left and walk up the stairs until you reach Via Pecunia. Follow this small road all the way to the castle. From the castle you can easily access the train station, but we’d recommend instead following the path towards the harbour to take in the kaleidoscopic blues of the water, the greens of the vineyards, all punctuated by small plots of land filled with juicy tomatoes, ripe squash and aromatic lemon trees (don’t pick or trespass though). If you walk this route without a break, you could easily do it in under 45 minutes"
"Amazing views (like much of Cinque Terre), it's worth the hike up to this old castle."
