Jajce Fortress
@petrahus
The Jajce Fortress, located in the Bosnian town of Jajce, is part of the Old Town complex. Believed to have been built in the 13th century, it features a southwest entrance adorned with the royal coat of arms. Encompassing an area of 11,200 square meters, its walls stretch for 1,300 meters.
Constructed by Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić, founder of Jajce, the fortress served as the seat of kings, evident from the engraved coats of arms within. Perched on an egg-shaped hill, it is strategically protected by the rivers Pliva and Vrbas. The entire area holds geographical and historical significance.
Tickets are priced at 5 KM (approximately 2.5 euros) for entry.

Pliva Waterfall
The Pliva Waterfall is a spectacular 22-meter cascade formed by a large tufa, or travertine barrier, in a narrow karstic zone. Originally 30 meters high, the waterfall's height was reduced due to an earthquake during the Bosnian War and subsequent flooding from attacks on the power plant upstream. It remains a symbol of Jajce's resilience and beauty.

Mlinčići
@petrahus
Mlinčići, located 6 km northwest of Jajce between Veliko and Malo Jezero, host a unique collection of 20 preserved watermills known locally as "mlinčići." These mills are situated on travertine barriers, arranged in two rows, showcasing high ethnographic value.
Built solely for function and necessity, these mills exhibit simplicity in design, devoid of decorations, windows, or ceilings. Each mill stands on wooden pillars of varying heights due to the uneven terrain, covered by multi-pitched roofs with shingles. Accessible via wooden planks, these mills are equipped with necessary machinery like grinders and mill wheels.
Originally constructed from wood, these mills have undergone reconstruction, including the addition of connecting pathways completed in 1985, facilitating continuous exploration. Despite damage during the Bosnian War, the complex has been fully restored, with one mill currently operational due to maintenance challenges.
In addition to their historical charm, the Mlinčići are illuminated at night, offering a picturesque attraction.
Their serene setting by Pliva Lakes also makes them ideal for water sports, including kayaking and rowing year-round, owing to the stable water conditions enhanced by unique hydrogen content. International competitions have been held here, including the 1963 European and World Championships.

Pliva Lake Viewpoint
@petrahus
Pliva Lakes, comprising Veliko and Malo Jezero, are nestled in the picturesque Pliva Valley, a short distance from Jajce and the village of Jezero. Veliko Lake, sitting at an altitude of 424 meters, stretches approximately 3.3 kilometers in length with an average width of 400 meters, expanding to 700 meters at its widest point. Its deepest point plunges 36 meters below the surface. The lakes formed at the confluence of the Pliva River, where it flows downstream from Jezero into Zaskoplje, and took on their current shape in the mid-20th century during the construction of the "Jajce 1" hydroelectric power plant.
These lakes showcase a fascinating geological history shaped by tectonic movements, lake formation processes, and river dynamics. They originated during the younger Tertiary period, evolving significantly during the Quaternary and Holocene epochs due to intense vertical and lateral erosion. Separated by distinctive travertine barriers, which formed over millennia in favorable ecological conditions, the lakes continue to evolve, reflecting their enduring natural beauty and geological significance.
