"Pliva Lakes, comprising Veliko and Malo Jezero, are nestled in the picturesque Pliva Valley, a short distance from Jajce and the village of Jezero. Veliko Lake, sitting at an altitude of 424 meters, stretches approximately 3.3 kilometers in length with an average width of 400 meters, expanding to 700 meters at its widest point. Its deepest point plunges 36 meters below the surface. The lakes formed at the confluence of the Pliva River, where it flows downstream from Jezero into Zaskoplje, and took on their current shape in the mid-20th century during the construction of the "Jajce 1" hydroelectric power plant.
These lakes showcase a fascinating geological history shaped by tectonic movements, lake formation processes, and river dynamics. They originated during the younger Tertiary period, evolving significantly during the Quaternary and Holocene epochs due to intense vertical and lateral erosion. Separated by distinctive travertine barriers, which formed over millennia in favorable ecological conditions, the lakes continue to evolve, reflecting their enduring natural beauty and geological significance."
