Costa Rica is absolutely worth the hype! The vibrant biodiversity, stunning landscapes, and thrilling adventures make it a paradise for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike. From lush rainforests to pristine beaches, the sheer beauty of this country will leave you awestruck.
How Many Days Do You Need in Costa Rica?
It truly depends on what you want to explore. Ideally, I'd recommend spending at least one week to fully immerse yourself in its wonders. However, if you're short on time, a well-planned 5-6 day trip can still give you a taste of its diverse experiences. You can easily condense this itinerary to fit your preferences and schedule!
When is The Best Time of Year to Visit?
Costa Rica offers amazing attractions all year round! On average, the country receives about 100 inches of rainfall annually; however, in the mountainous rainforest regions, this can skyrocket to a staggering 24 feet of rain per year. Typically, the wet season experiences more rainfall, while the dry season sees significantly less precipitation. Understanding these seasonal variations can help plan the perfect time for your Costa Rican escapade!
Wet Season
The rainy season, also known as the green season, from May to November, showcases lush greenery and is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts and those seeking quieter surroundings to enjoy the country’s natural beauty.
If you don’t mind the rain, traveling during Costa Rica's rainy season is an immersion into a world bursting with vibrant life. The lush green landscapes create a stunning backdrop, offering a picturesque canvas for every adventure. For wildlife enthusiasts, this period is an absolute delight, as the increased rainfall brings forth an abundance of wildlife, making it an ideal time for spotting various species in their natural habitats. This time of year also marks the off-season for tourists, presenting an ideal opportunity to explore amidst serene and less crowded environments.
Dry Season
Of course, the dry season, from December to April, is popular for sunny days and ideal hiking conditions.
Traveling during Costa Rica's dry season provides impeccable conditions for hiking adventures. The clear skies and warm weather create a perfect backdrop for exploring the diverse landscapes, from tropical rainforests to stunning coastlines. With the weather in your favor, you'll have ample opportunities to embark on outdoor activities, soak up the sunshine, and witness the breathtaking beauty of Costa Rica's natural wonders.
Is Costa Rica Suitable for Solo Travelers?
Costa Rica turned out to be my very first solo travel destination, and it was nothing short of extraordinary! This stunning country is an absolute gem for solo explorers. Its friendly locals, well-developed tourism infrastructure, and countless activities cater to solo adventurers seeking unforgettable experiences. Whether you're into outdoor adventures or cultural explorations, Costa Rica welcomes solo travelers with open arms!
Transportation in Costa Rica
Getting around Costa Rica is relatively straightforward, with various transportation options available including water taxis and ferries, private shuttles and taxis, public buses, and car rentals. It is also important to note that if you book an excursion or tour, transportation is included with pick up and drop off at your accommodation.
Buses
Costa Rica’s public bus system is extensive and affordable, covering most areas, including popular tourist destinations. It's a great option for budget travelers or those looking to experience local culture. Routes and schedules can be checked online at the sites linked below or at bus stations.
Private Shuttles and Taxis
If you prefer a more comfortable and flexible option, private shuttles and taxis are available. Services like Zuma Tours, Interbus, and Tropical Tours Shuttles provide reliable and convenient transportation. These services can be booked online or over the phone, offering a range of vehicles to suit different needs. Taxis are also plentiful, especially to and from the airport.
Water Taxis and Ferries
These are convenient for reaching coastal towns and hopping between the Nicoya Peninsula and the mainland. Companies like Zuma Tours, Tambor Ferry, and Water Taxi Montezuma offer schedules and ticket purchases online, though you can also buy tickets at the docks. I personally took the Tambor Ferry to Montezuma Beach and Zuma Tours from Montezuma to San José.
Car Rentals
While renting a car is an option, it is not necessary for most travelers and for this itinerary. If you don’t want to take public transportation then private shuttles and water taxis offer ample flexibility and comfort, making it easy to plan your stops and explore at your own pace.
Day 1: Arrive in San Jose
Arrive in San Jose and get settled into your accommodation at any time before heading out on the town. The day is all yours–whether it's wandering through Parque La Sabana, a peak into Teatro Nacional, or exploring the lively Mercado Central! Eat dinner at a local restaurant before heading to bed early for an early morning adventure!
Day 2: White-Water Rafting on Pacuare River
Wake up early to embark on an adrenaline-pumping white water rafting adventure on the Pacuare River! Opt for direct booking with the recommended private tour company for a seamless journey. They take care of everything, providing over 4 hours of transportation from your hotel or hostel to the river and later to your next destination, La Fortuna. Plus, they serve up a traditional Costa Rican breakfast before the rafting begins.
Halfway through this breathtaking journey, pause for a picnic lunch including fresh local pineapple and watermelon, which the guides carry down the river with the rafts. The combination of the heart-pounding rapids and serene views creates an unforgettable experience, offering an immersive introduction to Costa Rica’s astounding natural beauty.

Day 3: Rainforest Adventures in La Fortuna
Nestled in the heart of Costa Rica, La Fortuna is a rainforest town with lush greenery, natural hot springs, and an array of exhilarating activities. Begin your day bright and early to make the most of the upcoming adventures! I highly recommend booking a tour directly through your hotel or hostel to ensure seamless accommodations, including transportation and entry to each activity. Typically, the shuttle bus will pick you up early, usually between 7 and 8 am, depending on the tour you choose. In the following section, I delve into my experience and showcase similar packages I was considering!
Arenal 3 Tour Combo – Arenal Volcano Hike, La Fortuna Waterfall, and Arenal Hanging Bridges
I opted for the Arenal 3 Tour Combo, which included a hike and tour around the Arenal Volcano, a visit to the majestic La Fortuna Waterfall, and a walk through the captivating Arenal Hanging Bridges. Other packages I considered included combinations of hot springs, waterfall jumping, canyoneering, and wildlife tours, each offering a unique perspective on La Fortuna's natural beauty. In the following section, I delve into my experience and showcase similar packages I was considering!
Arenal Volcano Hike and Tour
Start the morning with a hike and tour of Arenal Volcano! The hike follows a short and steep path along rugged lava rocks that offer a glimpse into the geological history of the volcano. Among the 200+ volcanoes in Costa Rica, Arenal stands as one of six that remain active. Its last major eruption took place in 1968, and it has been in a resting phase since 2010.
La Fortuna Waterfall
Descend a staircase of over 500 steps to reach the base of the magnificent La Fortuna waterfall! Upon arrival, the sheer power of the waterfall is awe-inspiring. Its forceful 250-foot cascade creates an immediate deep pool that is invigoratingly cold yet surprisingly pleasant. Venturing into the pool beneath the waterfall, I felt the intense rush of the water, making swimming back a challenge. Eventually, I made my way to a slightly calmer spot near the edges to enjoy the refreshing waters away from the direct impact of the waterfall. Overall, the experience was breathtaking and truly unforgettable. You can choose to take a plunge in the water like I did or simply relax at the base of the waterfall, allowing yourself to absorb the captivating surroundings.
Lunch at Hunter & Gatherers Restaurant
Our midday stop brought us to the exquisite Hunter & Gatherers, a scenic open-air, traditional Costa Rican restaurant! Without a doubt, this was one of the culinary highlights of my trip! The atmosphere was serene and the plantain chips were a standout – thin and perfectly fried.
Arenal Hanging Bridges
Explore the enchanting Arenal Hanging Bridges and witness the rainforest from a bird's-eye view! The dense biodiversity reveals itself as you traverse the six hanging bridges, with the tallest reaching up to 148 feet high. Immersed in the heart of the rainforest, your knowledgeable guide will point out diverse wildlife including insects, snakes, sloths, birds, monkeys, and other wildlife nestled among the treetops.
Alternative Excursions & Activities
I chose the Arenal 3 Tour Combo, which includes all of these activities, but you can customize your experience by selecting just one or two, or mixing and matching from the options below. While visiting all three sites is highly recommended, it's entirely up to you. You can also explore other excursions and activities listed below. If you have time, consider ending your day at the Baldi Hot Springs or even check out the local natural hot springs in the area.

Day 4: La Fortuna to Montezuma Beach (Travel Day)
Prepare yourself for a long travel day to stunning Montezuma Beach. Montezuma Beach, nestled along the Pacific Coast, boasts captivating beauty and a relaxed atmosphere that makes the travel time entirely worthwhile.
Start your day with an early morning departure with one of the transportation options outlined in the transportation section.
Arrival at Montezuma Beach
Upon arriving at Montezuma Beach during the late afternoon or early evening, you'll discover a charming little town full of character! The quaint streets are lined with vibrant street art and various displays showcasing local artists' craftsmanship, including handmade jewelry, paintings, and more.
If you arrive before sunset, you can head straight to the beach to unwind and appreciate the beautiful waters before heading out for dinner. I enjoyed a dip in the waves and found the water to be the perfect temperature.
Day 5: Beach Day in Santa Teresa
Wake up whenever you desire and head over to Santa Teresa, another epic beach town on the opposite side of the Nicoya Peninsula! Santa Teresa holds a unique and laid-back vibe – it’s a place where everyone roams in swimsuits and zips around on ATVs!
While in Santa Teresa, consider checking out Selina Hostel. I opted for a $20 day pass, which I could use towards food and drinks at their restaurant, and it also granted me access to their pool and showers for the day! Conveniently located just an alley block away from the beach, the hostel provided easy access for me to switch between the cool shade of the pool and the sunny beach and ocean waves.
The town offers a variety of activities at your fingertips. You can either book activities through Selina or local companies, including surf lessons and horseback riding along the coastline, or opt for a relaxing day at the spa, complete with relaxing treatments and nail services. Selina also provides surfboard and boogie board rentals for those seeking a day of ocean adventures. The choice is all yours!
Before heading back to your accommodation in Montezuma, make sure to stay and witness the mesmerizing sunset painting the sky as the sun sets into the Pacific Ocean. It’s a sight you wouldn’t want to miss!

Day 6: Sea Snorkeling & Tortuga Island
Prepare for an all-day adventure of snorkeling and exploring Tortuga Island! You can easily book this excursion directly at one of the tour companies in Montezuma or online through the website linked below.
Before embarking on this exciting tour, I made the most of the early morning by watching the sunrise and having an ocean swim. Afterward, I enjoyed a typical Costa Rican breakfast before heading to the boat to Tortuga Island at 9 am.
The journey to Tortuga Island began with a 45-minute-long scenic ride on the stunning blue waters of the Nicoya Peninsula before stopping at the first snorkeling spot. I enjoyed the pleasant breeze, tropical drinks, upbeat music, fresh fruit, and hot sun (don’t forget sunscreen for a day filled with sun and water!). Our captain kept an eye out for dolphins and made stops at intriguing rock formations along the way.
After snorkeling, we made our way to Tortuga Island, where a typical Costa Rican lunch, courtesy of the tour company, awaited us. The island provided ample opportunities to grab drinks, relax on lounge chairs, and engage in water activities like banana boat rides.
After the sunset, we returned to experience the bioluminescence. Once it was dark enough, the captain poured water on the boat deck, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that seemed to make the water dance and spark! We then had the opportunity to jump into the dark water and witness the mesmerizing display of bioluminescence illuminating our surroundings.
This full-day excursion was a great blend of relaxation and adventure with thrilling snorkeling and stunning bioluminescence.
Day 7: Montezuma Beach to San Jose
Enjoy a morning at the beach or hike to Montezuma Waterfall before heading back to San José in the early afternoon. Montezuma Waterfall consists of three stunning cascades. The top waterfall, standing at 15 feet, features a deep pool perfect for swimming. You can reach the middle waterfall by swimming to the edge of the top waterfall, where it drops 40 feet into another pool—just be cautious and watch your step. The lower waterfall, the tallest of the three, stands at an impressive 80 feet!
Montezuma Beach to San Jose
Take one of the transportation options back to San Jose and enjoy the rest of the night.
Day 8: Poás Volcano and Doka Coffee Plantation Tour
On my last full day, I opted for a combo tour to Doka Coffee Plantation and Poás Volcano, which included all transportation with convenient pickup and drop-off from my accommodation.
Doka Coffee Plantation
The day began early with a visit to Doka Coffee Plantation. We started with a buffet-style breakfast accompanied by fresh, bottomless coffee—an absolute treat! The tour of the plantation was both informative and enjoyable, as our guide walked us through the entire coffee-making process. We had the chance to sample a variety of coffees produced on-site. The plantation also features a beautiful butterfly garden and vibrant flowers, adding to the overall experience.
Poás Volcano National Park
Next, we headed to Poás Volcano National Park to witness the famous Poás Volcano. The park offers a few short walking trails, including one that leads to the volcano, which is still active (last eruption in 2017). The sight of the volcano is breathtaking, especially with the bright blue lake that sits in its crater. Fog often rolls in, so be sure to snap a picture as soon as you get a clear view. We arrived just in time before the fog obscured the stunning scene.

Optional Add-On: La Paz Waterfall
If you're looking to add more to your day, consider including a visit to La Paz Waterfall. I wish I had! This popular waterfall offers a refreshing spot for a swim. The trail to the waterfall is a 0.8-mile out-and-back hike, rated as moderate. I highly recommend it if you're a fan of waterfalls or simply want to cool off with a dip.
DAY 9: Depart from San Jose
Spend your final morning in San Jose soaking in the last of the local charm. From there, you can depart at your convenience, concluding your unforgettable Costa Rican adventure.
