Copenhagen - 2 Day Budget & Healthy Travel (Europe Series)
WELCOME to Copenhagen on a BUDGET and HEALTHY.
First things first...
Decide on the Copenhagen Card.
Copenhagen Card (CC).
If you want to go to lots of museums, tourist destinations and have unlimited public transport; buy the card.
I bought the card as I didn't want to risk spending more on activities/transport, than the price of the card.
If you choose not to buy; I will tell you what I personally think is worth going to see and what is not.
Arrival Day
BUDGET ACCOMODATION: Arrive in the evening and stay the night at Danhostel.
Day 1
GF/VEGAN FOOD: Walk to Mad & Kaffe for breakfast.
Choose from Bakery, Dairy, Greens, Protein and Treat of the Day.
It's worth the price to go once!
Get the metro to Kongens Nytorv and walk around Nyhavn.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: Have a photo on the bridge with the colour buildings behind you.
PAID ACTIVITY: Take a canal tour around the city.
A Stromma Canal Tour is included in the CC or you can buy a ticket.
Most tours are reasonably priced and are definitely worth doing.
FREE VIEW: Go up the Christiansborg Palace Tower.
It's free but it's not my personal favourite view.
PAID ACTIVITY: Visit the Glypoteket.
If you like art and sculptures then it's worth a visit. I only went because I had the CC.
The indoor garden was beautiful but I personally found the rest boring. You also have to store all of your belongings in lockers.
GF/VEGAN FOOD: Get gluten free or vegan pastries at the Naturbageriet.
BUDGET FOOD OPTION: I picked up some groceries for a picnic lunch to eat with my pastries.
FREE ACTIVITY: Eat lunch in the Botanical Gardens.
PAID ACTIVITY: Go to the exhibition inside the conservatory. It's included with the CC, other you have to pay a small fee. This is worth going to!
PAID ACTIVITY: Go up the Round Tower.
It's included with the CC otherwise you have to pay a small fee. The view is better than the Christianborg Tower but it's still not my favourite.
FOOD OPTION: I had a curry for dinner at a nearby restaurant - tired and hungry!
FREE ACTIVITY: Go for a dip in one of the open water swim spots. Copenhagen has one of the cleanest harbours in the world!
FREE ACTIVITY: Go on an evening walk and visit the impressive Marmorkirken. You can even drop by the Amalienborg Palace nearby.
PAID ACTIVITY: Get the metro back to the Central Station or rent a Donkey Republic bike back to your hostel. These bikes are seriously cheap and there are loads parked outside the station.
Funny story - I met two random backpackers outside here and I ended up spending the next day with one of them!
Day 2
BUDGET FOOD OPTION: Have breakfast at the hostel.
I usually buy greek yogurt, berries and nuts from a supermarket to last me a few days. The Danhostel kitchen is not very busy, which is great!
Walk to Christianshavn from Danhostel.
MINDFUL ACTIVITY: Find a coffee shop and write a postcard. One for a friend and one as a travel journal. This is great for souvenirs!
PAID ACTIVITY: Go up the Church of Our Saviour.
This is THE best view in Copenhagen. The climb through the bell tower and up to the globe is both scary and exciting!
You have to pay unless you have the CC. If you choose any out of the 3 towers, DO this one!
FREE ACTIVITY: Walk to Christiania Freetown and explore... ;)
GF/VEGAN FOOD OPTIONS: Get street food for lunch at this food court.
BUDGET FOOD OPTION: The food is often under 100dkk (I would consider this cheap), however you could prepare a picnic lunch from groceries.
ICE CREAM LOVERS: Walk over the bridge and get ice cream at Kastbergs in Nyhavn.
FREE ACTIVITY: Visit Torvehallerne - a local market and food hall. It's so nice to wander around or have a bite to eat.
GF/VEGAN OPTIONS: Lots of food options here including a paleo cafe!
FREE ACTIVITY: Visit the fortress.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: Get a pic in front of the windmill!
FREE ACTIVITY: Visit the Little Mermaid.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: Get a photo with the famous statue.
GF/VEGAN FOOD OPTIONS: Go to Reffen for a street food dinner.
PAID ACTIVITY: Spend the evening at Tivoli.
Free entry to the gardens with the CC but you have to pay for rides. I'd recommend going with friends.
There is a light show in the evenings, but in summer it's not as good because it's not dark.
Walk back to the hostel from here.
Departure Day
BUDGET FOOD OPTION: Have breakfast at the hostel before heading to the airport.
Final Thoughts
Pros
* What a fabulous city; I felt so safe as a female solo backpacker!
* Great for coffee and street food.
* Lots of activities but even walking around is just stunning.
Cons
* It is as expensive as people say it is and I definitely could have spent more.
* If I went again I would not get the Copenhagen Card, however it was great to use it for unlimited public transport. I only went to certain attractions because I had it.
* Danhostel was not particularly sociable with lots of groups, families and random one nighters. It was cheap and it had a kitchen.
TOTAL COST: 345 pounds including all flights, transport, accomodation, food and activities.
I can't wait to go back!
