Italian espresso is all over Milan and no longer consumed only in bars, but also in markets, railway stations, bookshops and boutiques. Very good espresso is available all over the center of the city and so too is Starbucks as of 2018. 3rd wave coffee is slow to arrive in Milan as the city is saturated with really good espresso which always costs less than 1.50 euros. If you’re interested in old-school roasters, really good espresso and 3rd wave spots, this is the Thatch board for you.

Milan’s chic stop here for coffee while shopping on our Rodeo Drive. A beautiful and ornate step into the past. There is also a Marchesi is across the street which attracts younger international fashionistas.

It’s impossible to go wrong with their classic pastries, but the Lombardo sbrisolona and budino di riso—filled with creamy sweet rice and a touch of rum—is a particularly not-to-be-missed tribute to Milan’s old nickname “Milk City” and its famous location surrounded by rice fields.

While Duomo can feel like one big tourist trap, this escape one floor up inside the Marchesi (acquired by Prada Group in 2015) in the Galleria has a fantastic view and espresso is still less than 2 euros al banco. Other good coffee in Duomo: Cracco directly across the way which is also new, designed to look old. My friends love to bring candied lavender, mint and rose petals to their sweet loving friends. The aperitivo olives are memorable

After growing up in New York and graduating in art history from Oberlin College, I landed my dream job in the San Francisco office of the first publisher of visitor travel guides in America. After 6 years away working in travel and hospitality in the West, I moved to Brooklyn for a Masters in food anthropology at NYU. In 2012 I founded the Food Book Fair, a festival at the intersection of food writing and culture (celebrated in the NYTimes, The New Yorker and many more!). In 2015, I picked up and moved to Milan, Italy to produce the USA Pavilion at the food-themed World's Fair Expo Milano with the James Beard Foundation. I fell hard for Italy (and an Italian) and launched Risotto & Steel in 2017, determined to share untapped culinary Italy, helping visitors explore immersive, convivial and regional gastronomy. I have written about Italy for Eater, Prior and Italy Segreta. I live in Milan, work in Tuscany and left my heart in Liguria on a steep olive tree-covered hill overlooking the Cinque Terre sea.
