Ubud is in the center of Bali; close to amazing waterfalls and nature. I have paired this with the north of Bali because Ubud is a great home base to explore the areas surrounding it.
Some of the activities may an hour or two to get to, but Ubud is definitely the central hub for amazing day trips.

I had the opportunity to spend about three weeks living in Petitenget, Seminyak - kind of where all the trendy restaurants are - and had a lot of amazing food, some amazing sunsets, and nights spent on Seminyak beach.

Don't feel bad about going to Kuta. It's not a waste of a day if it's something you want to do. There are some fun things here that might appeal to you. It's a great place for shopping & nightlife.
