Ultimate Scotland Road Trip

Ultimate Scotland Road Trip

Ma I'm Fine
Hey, Sweet Thang!! Thanks for choosing my shop to help you have a fantastic road trip to Scotland! This was stop 3 on our 8-weeks of fun backpacking trip, aka our quarter-life crisis trip. My best friend and I hit the highlands and then partied hard in Edinburgh. Even though the weather was not in our favor, we still had a wonderful time. Watch Season 2 Episode 9 to travel with me! If you need to chat about anything, feel free to email - contact@maimfine.com Be safe on your adventure, and tag @ma.im.fine on Instagram so I can follow your travels! This guide was cocreated with Allison Bergin. xoxo Alexis

🤑 Money

Pounding Sterling: $50 = £39.22 (time of writing guide 2024)

Cash: I always bring cash for every country because you never know. What if your cards lock or get stolen? There was never a situation where I couldn't use my card, but I was happy I still brought some cash.

Average Daily Cost Per Person: low end $77 | high end $197

How much we personally spent for 7 days: $619 (I was able to stay with family friends 2 nights)

💳 Credit Cards

I recommend applying for a 0% APR travel credit card. I have two, one from Capital One and the other from Bank of America. I have had no issues with them and no yearly fee! I even used my points from my Capital One to pay for a portion of my flight to Iceland!

✈️ Airport

I recommend flying into Edinburgh Airport or training depending on where you are coming from.

🚗 Rental Car

Car Insurance: I did not get car insurance because my Bank of America CC covered me. If you're uncomfortable with that, I recommend purchasing insurance.

Young Driver Fee: Make sure you check their policies on young drivers. We got royally screwed.

Pro tip: check prices a few days to a week before leaving and see if prices have dropped. In Iceland, I originally paid $335.05 and rebooked 1.5 weeks for $174.35. Score! I was proud of that one. You can do this with accommodations as well!

⛽️ Driving

⚪️ Left side of the road (remember wide rights and tight lefts and - as the driver, you  want to hug the middle)

⚪️ Gas gonna expensive as fuck $80-$100

⚪️  You might accidentally hit your wipers when going for the blinker. Don't be flustered. It's okay.

⚪️  Make sure you look both ways!! Ally pulled out in front of a cop, and we almost got a ticket. lol

⚪️ Be prepared to pay for parking nearly everywhere.

Day 1 | Edinburgh

Depending on your timing, you can either pick up your rental car right away and head to Loch Ness or take a night in the city and pick up the car the next morning. If you stay the night, I would wait to get the car because 1 parking in the city is gonna be shit, and 2 why pay for an extra day.

Day 5

Head back to Edinburgh

Glenfinnan Viaduct
@maimfine
Harry Potter Train!! The train passes over Glenfinnan Viaduct four times daily: two times facing west at precisely 10:45 (the time I saw it) and 1:20, and facing east at 3:30 and 6:20. Outside of the afternoon service schedule in May and October, the train only passes twice daily, at 10:45 and 3:30. You can park at the Glenfinnan Visitor Center or the Glenfinnan Station Museum. Both have trails leading to viewpoints. I did the one at the station and saw it come around twice! Both places get packed, so give yourself enough time for parking and hiking!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ma I'm Fine
Ma I’m Fine ~ A podcast dedicated to inspiring adventure and helping Mother Earth! . Hi! I'm Alexis, but you can call me Lex! I am a California native who loves wildly epic adventures. Welcome to Ma I'm Fine's Thatch Shop! Here, you can save or buy all my travel guides. . Ma I’m Fine came to life after moving back home from Australia, thinking the knowledge and experience I gained would help others wanting to travel and become an au pair. I also wanted to remember my adventures and never lose the intimate details of my trips. There’s nothing like being able to relive your most cherished memories. As I’m no longer an au pair and currently work for a criminal defense attorney and non-profit, you can find me either on a road trip with my rooftop tent or living that backpacker hostel life. . I have always loved the outdoors and truly fell in love with our planet after getting certified in Scuba Diving. My passion for helping Mother Earth intensified after watching the Netflix documentaries Seaspircy, Our Universe, and Life On Our Planet. I believe change comes from knowledge and emotion; these documentaries changed my perspective. I want to use MIF to educate, bring awareness, and create change in order to leave Mother Earth a better place. I donate a portion of my profits to different non-profits depending on their location. Thanks for being here!
