Lassen Volcanic National Park
1.Start your morning hike
Bumpass Trailhead
@ventureray
Bumpass Hell is a hot bed of geothermal activity and it is AMAZING. I don’t understand how Lassen doesn’t gain more traction with this hike. Maybe only geology nerds get that excited for 16 acres of geothermal activity. The hike is 2.8 miles round trip and do be mindful of the elevation it isn’t bad but it is there. Stay on the path and don’t try to touch anything or you’ll end up one leg short like Mr.Bumpass. Hence Bumpass’s Hell.

3. Sight see/hike inside the park before heading back out to the subway cave
This is a great place to have lunch/cool off from the mid day heat!
Subway Cave Lava Tubes
@ventureray
Here are the coordinates just in case :) 40.68604° N, 121.41884° W
This lava tube cave is located in the Lassen National Forest outside of the park. You will need to bring a flash light but the cave isn’t that long at only 1/3 of a mile. The lava tube doesn’t have multiple caverns so don’t worry about getting lost and it’s easy to navigate. We hiked past a handful of parents with small children who were having a blast running around in the dark. It’s a neat short stop that you could easily spend more time in.

4. Hike on top of a cinder cone
Cinder Cone
@ventureray
This is a 4.7 mile hike with 1,000 feet of elevation gain. This won’t be for everyone and you may want to just hike in to see the base of the cinder cone and hike back. We did to many other hikes inside the park and were to tired to do it. Learn from my experience and go hike that cone!
