10+ Gluten free friendly Cafés and Restaurants in Munich
10+ Gluten free friendly Cafés and Restaurants in Munich
Kristina Savic
This guide is for everyone who is searching for gluten-free places while traveling in Munich! As a celiac who grew up in Munich, I have tried a lot of different restaurants and made both bad and great experiences regarding the knowledge of the waiters and the gluten-free alternatives. There are many more restaurants and cafés in Munich where one can enjoy something gluten-free, but it is important to explain it to the waiters when you order. In this guide though, I only recommend places I am sure that have the experience and knowledge to avoid contamination. I will add more from time to time :)

Berni‘s Nudelbrett
@The_Independent_Celiac
Berni´s Nudelbrett is located in Munich City Center right next to Marienplatz. On warm days you can enjoy your meal outside. The wooden interior gives you a Bavarian feel and the window offers a great view of the Viktualienmarkt. They offer gluten-free pasta and otherwise they have a selection of different salads, meat and fish where celiacs could also choose something from. Make sure to communicate that it has to be gluten-free. I tried the pasta and salad and enjoyed it :)

Locanda Busento Pizzeria
@The_Independent_Celiac
Locanda Busento is an Italian restaurant with a rustic flair inside and an inner patio to dine outdoor. Every pizza can be made gluten-free and with lactose-free mozzarella cheese. I have been there several times, but would recommend not to visit the place during peak hours or without reservation to avoid waiting a long time for the food.

dean&david | Bowls, Salate, Curries & Snacks!
@The_Independent_Celiac
Dean&David has a lot of restaurants in Munich, this one is an express restaurant in the underground passages at Marienplatz. You can find a allergen list online and they declare every gluten-free meal on the online menu. They have different tasty salads, bowls and curries with gluten-free options and you can also build your own gluten-free salad or bowl, with meat or vegetarian/vegan. They also have little desserts which you can check on in the allergen list. I have been to different dean&david restaurants so far and enjoyed the salads and bowls the most.

Pizzesco
@The_Independent_Celiac
Pizzesco is a small, relaxed pizzeria near to the river Isar. They have pizza slices to go as welk, but I am not sure about if it is possible to get only one slice gluten-free pizza. But from my experience, I enjoyed having more than only on slice ;-) They have different gluten-free pizzas and especially great gluten-free desserts: Tiramisu, Crema Catalana, Pannacotta and a whole Pizza Nutella (which is enough for at least two sweet tooths!)

Cafés
Isabella Glutenfreie Pâtisserie
@The_Independent_Celiac
Only a short walk from Marienplatz in Munich City Center, you will arrive to this gluten-free paradise. Here, everything is gluten-free! All I have tasted so far was delicious, although it is expensive. Still I can recommend it as it is one of the only entirely gluten-free bakeries in Munich. The earlier you are there, the wider the choice!

Das METTA
@The_Independent_Celiac
I just heard about Das Metta, which seems to be a quite new café in Munich with gluten-free sweets like cinnamon rolls. The baked goods are from "Echt jetzt", an exclusively gluten-free bakery which can be ordered from online and also picked up in Munich on certain days. Das Metta seems like a cool place with a good opportunity to try the products from "Echt jetzt", which I can highly recommend.

Vitalia has not only a lot of different gluten-free products to buy (at the very back), but this shop next to the Viktualienmarkt has a small bakery right at the entrance. Next to other baked goods containing gluten, they have fresh and packed gluten-free bread, ready-to-eat sandwiches and also little sweets.

schmatz. Naturkost am Glockenbach GmbH
@The_Independent_Celiac
Schmatz is a organic food shop with a gluten-free shelf, but more importantly, a counter with fresh-food like bread and cheese. There you can find also fresh, packed gluten-free bread and other gluten-free sweets. I can recommend the shop if you happen to be in the area, but the bread they offer is from the same company as in the other shops I recommend in my guide, which might be closer to you. However, it is a short walk away to the river Isar, which is very nice to see.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Kristina Savic
Hi! I am a lifelong celiac who loves to travel and explore the world. I thrive at planning travel itineraries but understand that it takes a lot of time to create the best route for oneself.
Being a celiac (who also is a vegetarian) can be stressful while traveling as it requires even more research, preparation and still there can be negative surprises on the journey. But I never let the joy of travelling be taken away from me.
Therefore, my partner and I founded The Independent Celiac, with the purpose to help the celiac community to travel with ease! Here, as an addition to The Independent Celiac and my own website kristinasavic.com, I share my gluten-free maps and my self-toured itineraries with you.
I grew up in Munich (Germany), now live in Gothenburg and am currently exploring Sweden. Follow us on Instagram or Facebook to be a part of our journey and have a great trip!
