Alba Wine Tastings

Alba Wine Tastings

So, the town of Alba is a perfect size for strolling the streets and finding little bars to pop into for a taste of some of the great local wines from the Langhe region. I have found not all wineries are open to the public and are sometimes way off the beaten track so if you looking to stay central and not have to worry about how is driving and how is drinking then Alba is a great place to do a little wine tasting self-guided style. You never know you might even meet a few wine makers in the process they love to hang out in Alba for all the same reasons you wanna visit like the food is great.

Alba
@RoamingGraciously
Alba is one of the main cities in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato. The town is famous for its white truffle (also heaps of black) wine production of the king of Italian wine Barolo (Barbaresco and Nebbiolo as well as lesser-known varietals like Nacetta a white varietal I LOVE) and delicious hazelnuts just to name a few, so it has a bit going on and a heap of reasons to visit. Honestly is so beautiful you will not want to leave, it is only 40 mins from Turin and 2 hours from Milan and about the same as Bologna (another incredible northern Italian city) so its basically the centre of Italy.

Enoteca, Wine Bar, Cafe and Wine Store all have the goods

I can't get enough of this region; there are so many fantastic wine bars serving simple yet slightly traditional snacks. The wine selections in the following places are outstanding, and you can even try some older vintages—an absolute treat for anyone keen on tasting serious wine without committing to a whole bottle (though, of course, that's always an option). In Alba, the choices are plentiful, and you're bound to find your own favourite. For those with a car (lucky you), take full advantage and explore the regional spots—most are tasting rooms for local producers, eliminating the hassle of scheduling appointments with individual wineries. It's a great way to figure out which wineries you want to visit on a dedicated day.

Location location location so its a bit more touristy and the prices are a little higher but go for a drink for sure and watch the world go by. The main square is beautiful to sit in and enjoy an aperitivo. - If you go at the right time you will get a little snack (potato chips maybe) with your drink.

Vincafe'
@RoamingGraciously
This is hands down my favourite place in Alba for a long or short lunch, a cheeky glass of wine or a quick coffee. The owner and matriarch of the family is normally on the till and the boys run around doing a wonderful job at keeping locals and tourists happy. - They also have rooms you can stay in so try and get one if you can.

Regional Favourites

Cantina Comunale di La Morra
@RoamingGraciously
La Morra is cool so if you can make the effort to take a drive from Alba for a day even. This is the heart of Barolo country this place is the store and tasting site for a heap of local producers so is very valuable to the community. - One of the best meals of my life was in La Morra at a place not far called Le Terrazza Bar da Renza Roffini. GO

Enoteca Regionale Del Roero | Canale
@RoamingGraciously
Worth a drive if you are keen on white wine and have missed it being in the region of Italian reds (The king is Barolo) The Enoteca features wines from over 100 producers in the Roero and includes Roero Arneis, Barbera d’Alba and Favorita wines. - There is also a restaurant on site and it's talked about a lot so I would like to try it one day its called Davide Palluda. Marchesi di Barolo

If you head this way you might as well call in (I say that but they close for all of Aug and a bit of the months earlier in the year so check first) Great visitor experience and worth the money if you are really keen on these wines, and it gets paired with food, they also have a fancy restaurant. A great part of the world to spend a weekend in, I love it

Bottega dei 4 Vini
@RoamingGraciously
Neive is cute but hard to find much open sometimes, this place is a little hidden and a wonderful thing to find. Staff are warm and welcoming and share a lot of knowledge of the area and the wine. By the glass and bottle (both recommended) - snacks are good especially eaten on on the porch in summer.

Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour
@RoamingGraciously
Count Cavour used to call this place home so its another castle this time from the 13th century and its so worth a visit event just to see the beautiful complex. The enoteca was one of the first to be established in the region and is still great today. The selection is strong and they have a bit of everything including some of the white that tend to be forgotten next to the reds. - On the floor above the Enoteca is the Grinzane Cavour Restaurant which is open for lunch and dinner most days

Enoteca Colline Del Moscato
@RoamingGraciously
Repurposing old buildings is a thing, this regional taste hub is housed inside an old prison. You can get a meal, have a few drinks and like the others have tastings of Moscato d’Asti, Asti Spumanti, Moscato Passito, and Moscato grappa. - If you have not had much Grappa this is a great time to start learning.

Enoteca Regionale del Barolo
@RoamingGraciously
Barolo belongs in the castle of Marchesi Falletti. The idea of a one-stop shop for all your singular wine varietals is such a great idea and gives the wine enthusiast a lot more options in a short amount of time. This place has over 120 Barolo labels from different vintages and producers. - I am not the biggest fan of Barolo but this place has been recommended by Sommelier colleagues and I have sent visitors their reports are all good.

Enoteca Regionale del Barbaresco
@RoamingGraciously
As the name suggests it's all about Barbaresco and it delivers, a great range from numerous producers (grappa also) Tasting bar is in-depth and more contemporary than some of the others going around. - In September they celebrate the harvest so a heap of cool stuff happening and is located in the 19th-century chapel of San Donato.

Vinoteca Centro Storico

Serious wine in a relaxed atmosphere in a serious wine region is what I am looking for always. It's at the foot of a castle and the service is warm and friendly, the wine selection is fantastic so try and go if you have a car. - If you want to eat in their restaurant you will have to book ahead it packs out and the food its traditional Piedmontese.

Koki Wine Bar
@RoamingGraciously
Super popular and fun place, Koki began his odyssey from Japan to Barbaresco in 1998 with a job in an Italian restaurant in his hometown of Sapporo. You can ask him anything about the local wines he is great! - Food is great with a mix of Japanese and Italian.

Bar la Terrazza da Renza
@RoamingGraciously
If you are lucky enough to be heading out this way to visit La Morra (highly recommend you do) then if you can time it right and it's good weather head to this place. It's some of the best food I ate last year, not kitchen as such so all the food is served warm so a lot of veg and salads some cured meats. The owners are magic mum cooks and her son is a cool dude DJ and runs the floor. - The views are killer as is the wine selection bottle or glass and takeaway as well.
