Indonesia in 3 weeks - Bali and Nusa Penida🌏

Indonesia in 3 weeks - Bali and Nusa Penida🌏

Indonesia is one of the most amazing destinations I´ve ever been. The food, people, culture, beaches, forest, accomodations and much more. In this guide you will find the best places to visit on Bali and Nusa Penida. Also, if you don´t wanna spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for resorts, I will show you some nice accommodations🏠 where to stay in budget and because good food means good mood, you will see here a lot of great restaurants🥢 and bars🥂 I´ve been. Before we start, you should know that Indonesia is not just about the beautiful beaches and cheap food. Everything has its own magic. I did this trip myself so I can say, you have to try something from everything because if you stay in one or two places, you will never see what else these islands can offer you.

Bali

- the main island for tourism. It completly differs from the whole Indonesia. Bali is multi-religious with a majority practicing Buddhism. These people have tranquil and peaceful lifestyle so you can feel comfortable and safe, even for a solo traveller.

When to go?

 Indonesia lies on the equator. That means it has two seasons: the dry season☀️ from May to October and the rainy season🌧️ from November to April. Best time to visit should be from April to September due to the weather conditions BUT it's important not to base your decision just on weather and here's why.

From my personal experience, most of the rain occurs during the night or briefly throughout the day. It´s not as sunny as in the dry season but at least you won´t get sunburned.😃

You can watch the forecast but it changes from day to day so don´t rely on that.

After arrival:

Save some money during your first days 💵

The only thing you need after your arrival is a SIM card which you buy at the airport. In the capital, Denpasar, there are higher prices than on the whole island, especially in places full of tourists like malls, beaches and around the airport. To save some money, try to avoid these spots. Instead of renting a motorbike outside the airport, go a bit further to the streets and rent it from smaller rentals or directly from the accomodation you´re staying in. The same is for malls. Don´t go shopping to the biggest one but try to find some of the local ones. The beaches are also full of locals that will try to sell you things you don´t need and which cost 5 times more than in stores outside the city centre

Tourists = walking wallets

If you are a tourist, they see you as a walking wallet. So first important thing to know about this area which you can find not that common for you is that they haggle over everything, except for prices in restaurants and markets. They are basically "proffesionals in haggling" and if you´re a tourist, they will definitely try to trick you and sell you their products for 5x higher price. To avoid the higher prices, don´t be afraid to use their own tactics on them.First days of my stay, I was a bit afraid because I wasn´t use to it and didn´t know what I can afford to say but after a few experiences I realized that haggling is a normal part of their life. Sometimes it was fun to bargain over just a bottle of water with locals.

Scooters before cars 🛵

As I said earlier, Bali is overcrowded with a lot of traffic jams, The roads are not wide enough to fit two cars, Sometimes, Google maps tell you "go this way" and there is no road or just a trail between some trees and road signs means nothing. Therefore, renting a car is really useless there. You won´t get anywhere. That´s why you should rent a motorbike instead. I know what you think. "What about my baggage? Where should I put my suitcase?" Well, on Bali, everything is possible. We were two people with two suitcases and two bags and it was fine to drive the whole island. For local it´s not a problem to fit there a whole kithen or even a cow.

Balinese culture:

Monkey Forest 🐵
@lucieslivkova
This was our first stop in Ubud. The entrance fee is around 4 euros but if you want some "extra services" like to take a photo with monkeys or feed them, you also have to pay for it but it is nothing expensive. One important thing is that you must NOT make an eye contact with them because they would become aggressive. There are not just monkeys but sacred temples and ancient stone statues covered with vines. It looked so mysterious and I loved it. TIP: Be careful with the monkeys because they are little thieves. If they had an opportunity, they would steal everything from you. Food, money and even a phone or camera.

Ceking Rice Terrace
@lucieslivkova
This is one of the most popular rice terraces on Bali. It is located in Ubud which is full of several rice terraces. We weren´t at this one because we stayed in Bersilla bungalows which were also on a rice terrace but Ceking Rice Terrace is definitely worth visiting.

Gate of Heaven Lempuyang Temple
@lucieslivkova
One of the most magical places on Bali. There is not just the gate itself but also a sacred temple where only monks can go. It was built on a hill so you have a really nice view from there and if you look through the gate, you will see the highest mountain Mount Agung⛰️ behind when the weather is good. The temple or the gate is sacred so there aren't allowed any kisses and even doing an arabesque is forbidden for some reasons. There are restaurants nearby, too. TIP: If you wanna avoid paid parking spot and a useless tourist bus, don't go the main road and find a side road directly to the gate.

Bali Handara Gate
@lucieslivkova
I saw this gate on social media that it is really famous and the photos are magical but when we came it wasn´t that cool. It is just a gate in the middle of the road. If you want to get closer or take a photo you have to pay. I didn´t like it but I added here because it is one of the main monuments on Bali and you will have good photos😉

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple
@lucieslivkova
We were on Bali during the rain season where there are not so many tourists and in this place there was no one. It was quite and everything was closed. The whole park had a weird energy. I would like to see how it looks during the main tourist season. TIP: Take more clothes with you because it is in the mountains and there is not as warm as in forests or beaches.

Uluwatu Temple
@lucieslivkova
Uluwatu temple belongs among the six key Bali temples, concerned as spiritual. It is located on the top of a cliff on the west coast with a beautiful sunset view🌅. You can buy a ticket to see those Kecak fire dances which are performed every day. However, take care of your staff! There are a lot of monkeys🐵 who are known for stealing things from tourists.

Other places to see:

The Kayon Jungle Resort
@lucieslivkova
I had to add this resort here. It is one of the most famous and at the same time most expensive resorts on Bali but it belongs to my low budget guide because you only have to pay a small fee for entering to this massive resort. You don´t need to be accommodated there to enjoy the pool and the bars. or take some photos from the place.

Bali Zoo
@lucieslivkova
I wouldn´t normally go to ZOO on my vacation because I could go any time in my country but I heard that Balinese ZOO is something more than other ZOOs so I decided to visit it and I didn´t regret. It was absolutely amazing! You can walk among animals, touch them and even feed them. It is very free but 100% safe, of course. I was also really surprised by the species of animals they had because some of them were from my country, which is in Europe, like dears, wild boars and ducks. It was funny to see them there as exotic species.😄 The entrance fee is around 22 euro but if you pay for extra services, you can feed the animals, take a photo with them or even ride an elephant. The extra services are between 3 - 15 euro as I remember.

Trails:

Mount Batur⛰️
@lucieslivkova
Mount Batur is the second highest mountain of Bali after Agung. There are amazing trails leading to the summit of the mountain. If you want to hike to the top, you need to go with an experienced guide because it can be really dangerous. You will pay cca 40 euros per person but it is definitely worth it. TIP: The trails leads through the jungle so it is good to take some medicine💊 with you like anti-malaria drugs or some drugs to exotic destinations.

Mount Agung
@lucieslivkova
Agung is the highest mountain of Bali. It is at the same time highest vulcano so be careful:) There are also trails and hikes with a guide but it is less known than Batur, in my opinion. You can see the whole mountain from The Heaven´s gate if you catch a good weather because it is often cloudy and covered in fog. The countryside looks like paradise. It is mountainous and everything is green. I guarantee you will never forget this view.

Waterfalls:

Leke Leke Waterfall
@lucieslivkova
It looks exactly like in the pictures. It was amazing and I liked that we could swim under the waterfall but the water was very cold:) On the way to the waterfall there is one bar, small swim and, of course, jungle. Locals have their stations where they want to get some money from you by offering you fruit or taking pictures. One guy even told us to give him money for cleaning the forest. It was actually funny and we ran away.

Aling-Aling Waterfall
@lucieslivkova
Aling-Aling waterfall is the main one but there are 3 more waterfalls on the way to this one. If you pay the guide they will allow you to go on a nature waterfall slide which looks dangerous but nobody was hurt and locals say it is safe. Still, I didn´t try:) Watch where you step because when I wanted to see the waterfall from a bamboo bridge, it broke and I almost fell. TIP: If you don´t wanna pay the entrance fee, wait until it closes, then go there on your own.⏰

Furthermore, there is a sacred waterhole, swing, many souvenir stores and as a new tourist atraction - Blangsingah Glass Bridge.

Beaches:

Uluwatu

Dreamland Beach
@lucieslivkova
I really liked this beach. It was beautiful and large. You could swim or one side and surf on another. It is a romantic place for watching sunset🌅 either from the beach or from the cliffs that surrounds it. There are even bean bag sofas on the cliffs. There are a lot of bars and restaurants which are very expensive💸. I would say that they are intended only for tourists because they didn´t match Indonesian style. They look like European or American restaurants, so as food and prices. I didn´t like it there. There is a small fee for entering the beach but nothing expensive. Cca 0,50 euro.

Nyang Nyang Beach
@lucieslivkova
One of the most beautiful beaches on Bali. It is really long but thin. The access to the beach is complicated, I would say, because the road is very steep so you have to be careful on your scooter and there are a lot of stairs which leads to the beach and a small beach restaurant. If you manage the way, you will see that it was worth it. Unfortunately, when we were there, it was raining but we still built a nice sand castle😍

Where to stay?

Ubud

Bersila La Maison Du Bonheur ❤️
@lucieslivkova
From all the accommodations I was on Bali, this one was my favourite❤️. It is located on a rice terrace, which was incredible because we had the most beautiful view from our bungalow. I loved the heart shaped swimming pool and the yoga room. There is a terrace where they made breakfast for us with fresh passion fruit from their garden. There was also a massage room but it didn´t work when we were there. It was during the rain season when there are less tourists so we had this small paradise just for ourselves.☺️

Black sand beach

Utamas Keramas ❤️
@lucieslivkova
One of my favourite accommodations. It is located quite near Ubud area and 300m far from black sand beach. I liked it mainly because of the amazing pool and garden they have. We could have fried bananas for breakfast right next to the pool on sunbeds☺️. They also offer these popular floating breakfasts which are just a little bit more expensive than a normal one. Rooms were cozy and clean but when we stayed there we saw small lizards on the wall which is normal on Bali and they aren´t dangerous. It was actually funny😅. The hosts were very nice to us and even advised us some restaurants. Funny thing that happend to us was that every day we heard prayers which were so loud that street dogs howled so loud and we couldn´t sleep. Unfortunately, this accommodation is not at Booking anymore but still you can find it on Agoda.

Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a small island located right next to Bali. There are the most beautiful beaches in the world and it is perfect for snorkling and diving. Its infrastructure isn't as advanced as Bali's, but at least there are less tourists.

It was a really great experience for me. In fact, I enjoyed it even more than Bali.

Beaches:

Kelingking Beach
@lucieslivkova
When someone mentions Bali, you likely picture this beach, right? However, this isn't exactly on Bali but on Nusa Penida, a neighboring island. This beach is one of the most stunning beaches in the world!🌊 It looks even better in real life but you may don´t know that the access to the beach is literally a hell. The first steps are manageable, with stone stairs tracing the cliff's edge. But then comes the real challenge. You have to go down the cliff just holding the bamboo ladder with one hand and your flip-flops in the second hand. It´s more like rock climbing. The way down lasts around an hour but trust me, the beach is absolutely worth the effort. There is even a small store where you can buy water or snacks. I think that in the future the government wants to build a massive lift to make it easier for more people, however, I think it will ruin the whole spirit of the place.

Then, we swam to a small island which was near the beach and we found there an old abadoned temple. It was so mystical. These bungalows have a great location because they are really near to the Diamond beach. I think that on Nusa Penida you won´t find any bad accommodation. Bungalow villages are common here and as I saw all of them look pretty and are almost the same. Moreover, if you look at the price, you will definitely love it even more. The price does not correspond to this beautiful place at all.

Puri Yalus Bungalow

This small bungalow village is incredible. We weren´t exactly accommodated in these bungalows but we saw how it looks there and I really wanted to reconsider my decision and move here. It is like a little paradise.

Maharga Bungalows
@lucieslivkova
These super cheap bungalows are close to the beautiful Crystal Bay. The service with breakfast is even better than to search for a breakfast in the morning somewhere else because there are not many restaurants around. People mostly appreciated the staff that has been helpful and polite to them and the cleanliness of the place. It has all positive reviews on Booking.

Restaurants:

Sunny cafe penida
@lucieslivkova
This seemed to me as one of the better restaurants there because there are actually not that many tourist restaurants. We went there for a lunch. The food was delicious as usual. Only thing I didn´t like was that we were bothered by street dogs because they were hungry. People are kinda used to that. This problem is happening all over the island. I felt sorry for them but at the same time you just don´t wanna eat your lunch when there are some dirty dogs next to you begging for food.

SLAZA PENIDA Restaurant & Bar
@lucieslivkova
Not far from Diamond beach is Slaza Penida restaurant. I think that this is one of the better places to eat on the island and if you don´t choose food from here, there are like 4 other restaurants on the street. We had pizza with sandwich and we were satisfied enough.

GRIYATAMA WARUNG
@lucieslivkova
It is not something extra but there aren´t many restaurants in this area. This is one of the better ones, I would say. You will taste local meals and you don´t have to be scared that you´ll find a dog meat on your plate:)

Red Pomelo Bar & Restaurant
@lucieslivkova
This place looked so pretty at night with all those lights. The food was really good, especially the black burgers but I had just one target - the dragon fruit juice.🫡

Wyn's Penida Cafe

Again, one of the better restaurants in this area, in my opinion. Food was tasty and basically the same as in the other restaurants nearby.

This café attracted me because it had two floors so you could sit upstairs and enjoy the view.

What I like on Balinese ice-cream is that it is not that creamy but more fruity.
