The museum was originally a luxurious private mansion. Built for a wealthy Argentine couple in the early 1900s, it was designed by a French architect and filled with exquisite antiques. After the wife passed away, the husband donated the mansion to the government, and it became the National Museum of Decorative Arts in 1937.
