Traveling to Florence? There are so many fun day trips to take that are right outside of the city and only a short train ride away!

Bologna

If you're looking to switch things up on your trip to Florence, Bologna is the perfect day trip destination. Only an easy 30 minute train ride away, this city is known for its delicious food (hello, Bolognese sauce and mortadella sausage) and rich history (the University of Bologna is the oldest in the world!). But Bologna has so much more to offer beyond just its grub and academics. The city's medieval streets and beautiful architecture will transport you back in time, and the lively atmosphere will have you feeling like a local in no time.

Pisa

Being a quick hour local train away, Pisa is an absolute must-go when visiting Florence. Sure, the leaning tower is a must-see, but there's so much more to discover in this Tuscan city. Pisa is home to stunning churches and cathedrals, like the Duomo di Pisa and the Battistero, and the historic Piazza dei Miracoli is a must-visit. I always reccomend grabbing a panino and enjoying it on the go while you look around!

Arezzo

If you're looking for something a bit less touristy than all the other cities, Arezzo is the place to be. This quaint city in Tuscany has so much to offer, from beautiful churches and museums to the bustling street market that takes place every first weekend of the month (they also have AMAZING Christmas markets if you are going around that time). Arezzo is also where they shot my favorite movie, "La Vita è Bella" (Life is Beautiful). Just be warned, there is not much english being spoken, but you will be fine if you point to things on the menu!

Siena

If you're looking for a day trip that'll add some serious flavor to your trip to Florence, Siena is where it's at. This Tuscan city is filled with medieval charm and has tons of Instagram-worthy spots, like the iconic Piazza del Campo and the beautiful Cathedral of Siena. But let's be real, you're not just here for the 'gram – the food in Siena is where it's at. I reccomend getting some Minestrone soup from one of its Michelin Star restaurants and even some salame chocolate for dessert.

San Gimignano

If you're in need of a break from the hustle and bustle of Florence, San Gimignano is a perfect get away. This medieval town in Tuscany is known for its tall towers (which make for the ultimate Instagram backdrop), but there's so much more to discover. From delicious local cuisine to beautiful churches and museums, San Gimignano has something for everyone. And let's not forget about those breathtaking views – you won't find anything like it anywhere else. I would really reccomend only spending a half a day here (... maybe a Siena and San Gimignano tour in one day kinda situation). But trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Chianti

(The Wine Region)

If you're a wine lover visiting Florence, you definitely don't want to miss out on a trip to the Chianti wine region. Located in Tuscany, this region is known for its iconic rolling hills and vineyards that produce some of Italy's *most delicious wines* (they are SO good). I personally believe the best way to experience this is through an authentic wine tasting experience. My wine-tasting was the best part of my entire trip. So why not ditch the crowds of Florence and head to the Chianti region for a taste (literally!) of something different?

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre, a string of five charming villages located along the Mediterranean coast, is the final and most perfect day trip destination for those visiting Florence. This breathtaking region is known for its rugged coastline, colorful houses, and breathtaking views, which can be seen by sets of hiking trails that connect the villages. A visit to the Cinque Terre is not complete without trying a cooking class, where you can learn how to make some of the region's famous dishes like pesto sauce and focaccia bread. The Cinque Terre is also home to a number of beautiful beaches, where you can relax and soak up the Mediterranean sun. I would avoid going in the winter, as it is not as lively!

I have been to florence many times, and though I love the city, it is so nice to escape and also explore the lesser known areas of Italy. I hope they help you add some fun and adventure to your trip to Florence. Safe travels & follow for more tips!
