I've been fortunate enough to visit Italy multiple times and even more fortunate to have been guided by true Italian friends. Here, I take all that I've learned from those travels and distill it into one perfect itinerary that hits the big highlights. 

This itinerary is a great fit for first-timers since it'll take you to the absolute must-see spots in Italy. You certainly won't see all the boot has to offer (just plan on coming back for future trips, plural, to make that happen), but you'll see the most iconic places at a reasonable, enjoyable pace. You'll be able to soak up all the history, food, wine, and dolce vita these cities have to offer. After this first taste, you'll be dying to come back for more!

This is the trip my family of 4 (including 10 & 12 year old kids) took this past summer. The children had been to Europe before at 4 & 6 and the oldest had also been as a toddler. Both parents have been multiple times. 

We enjoy fast paced travel but generally prefer to go to smaller cities or towns. We trained between Zurich-Paris, Paris-Brussels, and Edinburgh-London. We flew from Brussels-London. We rented  4 different cars and drove everywhere else.

7. Pisa: The Iconic Tower

Pisa, a picturesque city in Tuscany, Italy, attracts visitors with its iconic Leaning Tower, a marvel of medieval architecture. Beyond the famous tower, Pisa offers a charming historic center with beautiful squares, churches, and palaces. Visitors can enjoy strolling along the Arno River, exploring Piazza dei Miracoli, and experiencing the city's vibrant culture, making it a delightful destination for history enthusiasts and travelers alike.


Today this city is best known for the engineering folly of its Cathedral’s bell tower, but Pisa also has a rich history as a maritime republic that once rivaled Genoa and Venice. It is considered a hub of education with multiple prestigious universities. It also has famous museums, city architecture, monasteries, and more. 

Pisa a great destination, but I don't see it possible spending more than one day here. Pisa is only an hour train ride from Florence, and the perfect landmark to cross off your bucket list. For my guide on spending a day in Pisa, click below:

Hop on a train for 90 minutes, go see the leaning tower & Kieth Haring mural, grab food and jet back to Florence.
