If you're looking to embark on your dream California surf trip but;
- aren't sure where to go
- don't want to travel with your boards or wetsuits
- are looking for friends along the way - then look no further!
We have the perfect itinerary with all the classic coastal California road-trip stops, this itinerary will give you the full experience using Traveler Surf Club outposts as your surf destinations where you can rent high-quality boards, and wetsuits, get local knowledge on where to surf, then take a hot shower and continue on your way!
This itinerary is tried and true by surf photographer Michaela Rabinov and surfers Danielle Black Lyons, Jenayl Peters, and Naomi Folta.
This trip can be done in either direction. Because the van rental we recommend is located in San Francisco, we recommend doing this trip north to south, and then driving back up to drop your van off! If you choose to do this trip by staying in hotels instead of van-lifing it, or if you want to start your trip with the longer drive, you can do this in either direction.

Grab lunch
Enjoy snacks you have in your van, or grab lunch at one of these Pacifica favorites.
Located in the same center as Traveler Surf Club, Soul Grind offers delicious locally roasted coffee, breakfast foods, sandwiches, soups, salads, and more. They have indoor & outdoor seating.
Located in the same center as Traveler Surf Club, Humble Sea was started in Santa Cruz, and now has a couple of different taprooms, our favorite being this one in Pacifica. They brew their own local beer and serve some of the best tots we've ever had. The rest of their food menu is great too. They also have indoor & outdoor seating and a cool kooky vibe.
Yes, it's a taco bell, but it's Taco Bell's only beachfront cantina, and it's famous here in Pacifica, so you might want to check it out after your surf...maybe not before.

We recommend making a reservation for Nick's if you want a taste of old-town Pacifica while you're here. The menu is classic coastal and the vibe is dark and local - in a good way. They often also have live music.
Located just south of Pacifica in Half Moon Bay, this is the best place to camp in the area. This beachfront campground offers tent, van, and basic RV sites, beautiful views, bathrooms, and coin-operated showers.

One of Santa Cruz's most famous surf breaks, this beach offers a couple of different points that can break differently based on the swell. Here you'll find a wave good for any level, again, based on the swell. Have a chat with someone on the Traveler team at the shop about which peak to paddle out to.
Take the stairs down to the water across the street from the parking lot and paddle out to the Hook. Depending on the swell, this point break offers a really fun longboarding wave.
If you've never been to Santa Cruz, you probably should check out the boardwalk. Really go for it & have an afternoon here, or just walk it and take in the vibes.

Food & coffee in Malibu
If you want to dine out a bit while you're down in the 'bu, here are some of our favorites:
Traveler’s origin story all began when former pro-longbarder surfer Julie Cox and her partner Rel Lavizzo-Mourey moved into a house without a garage. After resettling in San Francisco from southern California, they had to make a few key adjustments to their surf routine.
First, they needed space to store board since their walk-up unit made for an awkward, ding-prone process of guiding 9-foot logs around a corner staircase and into a back room. Second, the chilly waters of the northern Pacific made peeling off 5/4 wetsuits in crowded parking lots a freezing-buns and out-of-breath experience. Lastly, finding time to talk waves with like-minded surfers was a bit more of a challenge as work, errands, and other adulting obligations cut into the post-surf wind-down sessions.
So seeking these three things: Storage, Warmth, and Community sparked the idea for the first Traveler Surf Club… in 2016 the concept of a relaxing space with hot showers, surfboard lockers, changing rooms, and heated furniture took hold in Pacifica.
Since then, the TSC concept has grown and evolved with each new location. As every break and surf community has its own needs and challenges, Julie and Rel have focused on building spaces that are tailored to fit the local vibe. While some spaces focus on services like fiberglass board demos, or high-level coaching, each TSC spot is a familiar place where the out-of-water experience is designed to bring stoke and good vibes to all who visit.
The Surf Clubs provide amenities and services including surfboard storage lockers, hot showers, coaching lessons, and surfboard rentals, all within steps from four of California's most popular surfing spots in Malibu, Santa Cruz, and Pacifica.
The adjoining Outposts sell outdoor-inspired gear, apparel, and home goods for those with an adventurous spirit.
