"Garrapata State Park is a short 20-minute drive from Monterey and is an incredible section of rugged cliffs and beautiful beaches reminiscent of Big Sur. Watching the waves crash here is pretty magical. We think this area would be perfect for sunset as well, especially during the winter. For some incredible views of the iconic coastline, check out Painter’s Point. It is a short walk from the Highway 1 pull-outs. To add on to a hike, you can add on Soberanes Point. If you continue walking past Painter’s Point, you’ll reach a ton of stairs leading up the side of a hill. Take the stairs all the way up for the best panoramic views from above. The view is looking back toward Monterey one way and at Big Sur on the other. Note that the beach is dog friendly - which is one of the few beaches in Big Sur that is. Note that parts of this park have been closed since the 2016 fires, so if you plan to explore more widely, be sure to check their website (linked below)"

"Stretching 2 miles along the coast and encompassing the canyons and mountains further inland, Garrapata offers some of our favorite hiking in Big Sur. There are numerous shorter coastal hikes as well as longer loops, so anyone visiting will be able to enjoy the views. Parking is free but can be tricky, there are limited spots along Highway 1 so be sure to slow down as you're approaching so you don't miss any spots! Our favorite hikes include: 🥾 Soberanes Canyon to Rocky Ridge Loop - 4.5 mi loop offering a birds eye view of the park, does include sections of steeper elevation gain 🥾 Soberanes Point and Whale Peak Loop - 1.6 mi roundtrip following the coastline including a short climb up the steps to the top of Whale Peak 🥾 Garrapata Bluff Trail - 0.5 mi out and back, the best hike to do if your limited on time or don't feel like walking too far"

"Known for its caves and coves, Garrapata is the gateway to Big Sur and often skipped over on the way to the more famous stretch of the central coast. The park straddles both sides of Highway 1. Hike out to Soberanes Viewpoint along the ocean or do the 1.25 mile Soberanes Canyon Trail heading inland. The lack of official signs makes it easy to miss. Keep your eyes peeled for three numbered turnouts marking the entrances to trailheads on both sides of the highway. "
