Visiting Mérida for the weekend? Here is an itinerary and some tips for visiting the city and its beautiful surroundings for a few days. I was born in the city and have lived here most of my life; as such, I'll give you an itinerary based on my favorite places and those I consider unskippable for a short-term visit. As it is the perfect place to explore the many wonders of the state it serves as capital, I'll share recommendations for places to visit, stay, eat, and drink in the city.

Top Areas to Travel to in Merida

Merida, the vibrant capital of Mexico's Yucatan state, offers a rich blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From its colonial architecture to its Mayan ruins, there are plenty of compelling reasons to visit this enchanting city. Here are the top areas to travel to in Merida:

Historic Center

Merida's historic center, also known as the Centro Historico, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-visit area. Stroll along Paseo de Montejo, an elegant boulevard lined with stunning mansions that reflect the city's opulent past. Admire the beautiful colonial buildings, such as the iconic Palacio de Gobierno and the Palacio Municipal. The Plaza Grande, the main square, is the heart of the city and is home to the impressive Merida Cathedral and the Government Palace.

Mayan Ruins

Just a short distance from Merida, you'll find a treasure trove of Mayan ruins waiting to be explored. Uxmal, located about an hour's drive southwest of the city, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the region.
