I was surprised to find that Colonia was founded by Portuguese settlers in the late 1600's, and is considered to be the oldest city in Uruguay. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a city full of charm and history, known for its picturesque colonial architecture, with influences from Portuguese, Spanish, and Brazilian. I spent 40 hours in Colonia del Sacramento and want to give you the best insights for what to do in a day trip or a weekend in this Uruguayan coastal town. I'll offer tips on both what to do and where to eat, as well as general tips for spending time in Uruguay.
