Vietnam is an incredible backpacking destination. It's varied landscapes, friendly locals, delicious food scene, and affordability make it ideal for budget travellers. In this three-week itinerary I'll share my top destinations, attractions, transport options, and my personal favourite places to stay and eat.

This is a map of all the places I went to on my 3 month backpacking trip. We flew into Bangkok then island hopped in south Thailand for 2 weeks before flying up to Chiang Mai to explore north Thailand for 2 weeks. Next stop was northern Laos for just over 2 weeks where we got the slow boat from Thailand to Luang Prabang. After Laos was an overnight bus to Hanoi in northern Vietnam where we worked our way down to the south over 3 weeks. Finally finishing in Cambodia for 3 weeks and then bus back to Bangkok to fly home. This map includes recommendations of things to do, places to stay and restaurant recommendations too. I have added in information about the visas, currency, how to get around and important tips and tricks we learnt along the way. You can fit in a lot less than you think when backpacking so this is a realistic map of what is achievable in 3 months. I've spent one month exploring Vietnam so I've put together the perfect 15 days itinerary - with extendable options up to 20 days - including where I stayed (+ alternative options), excursions, restaurants and cafes I tried, all the info you need before traveling, getting around etc Planning a trip to Vietnam can be tough so you can easily replicate my trip and avoid headaches. You will find budget, mid-range and luxury options (some luxury options are actually affordable) IS VIETNAM FOR ME? Vietnam is for you if you are open to different cultures, you're ok with being uncomfortable and experience new things. This itinerary involves night bus or night train but don't worry. For most of the destinations, if you prefer, you can switch the night bus with a flight or private car. IS VIETNAM SAFE? Absolutely yes. Vietnam is a pretty safe country, like all the countries of South East Asia in general. People are very friendly and they will always try to help you in every way they can. It's actually a very common destination for solo female travelers NB this is not a PDF but an interactive guide which means that when you click on a place in the guide or map, you can directly open directions on your phone's Google Maps app, call restaurants or book hotels.
