I absolutely love my lifestyle however can't lie tight budget is one of the downsides. Instead of giving up my travel dreams I just decided to become resourceful and find the perfect itineraries that still fit my tight budget and let me explore the world. Before every trip, I spend weeks planning and researching and it's one of my favourite parts of the adventure. However, I know it can be overwhelming and tedious at times so I decided to share my research and my itinerary with you. All places mentioned here are places where I have been/stayed/eaten myself and can give you an honest review. In this guide, you'll find an itinerary through the Balkans meant to take you through 6 countries throughout 26 days following my footsteps. I'll share with you my recommendations of where to stay and what to do as well as a detailed outline of the full cost (accommodation and transport). While its neighbor Croatia gets a lot of attention among world travelers, Montenegro is a personal favorite of the places I've traveled to over the years! My husband and I were looking at places to go for our anniversary one day, hoping for a mix of what we both love when we travel. He's an outdoor adventure fanatic, looking for any and every opportunity to commune with the clouds. I, however, prefer to sit at a cafe table on a cobblestone street, drinking a cup of coffee and reading a book, while I take in the unique buildings and shop for that souvenir I'll take home to add to the collection. In my researching, I found unbeatable flights to a country I hadn't ever heard of, but had it all: Montenegro. Whether you prefer mountains, quaint walled cities, the sea, or a combination of all of these things, Montenegro won't disappoint. While only about the size of the state of Connecticut, Montenegro packs a punch with how much there is to see in the country. Montenegro is right across from Italy on the Adriatic Sea, sharing borders with Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, and Albania. With a 7 day trip, you can see the majority of the country, experiencing the variety and beauty of Montenegro and its people. The Greek hidden gem Corfu, known as Kerkyra in Greek, is a stunning island located in the Ionian Sea off the northwest coast of Greece. Its rich history dates back to ancient times, with influences from various cultures including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, French, and British. This diverse cultural heritage is reflected in the island's architecture, cuisine, and traditions, making Corfu a unique destination in the Mediterranean. The island's capital, Corfu Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for its elegant Venetian architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and historic landmarks. The Old Fortress and the New Fortress are prominent features, offering panoramic views of the town and the sea. Corfu Town also boasts numerous museums, such as the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art, which showcase the island's rich history and cultural connections. Corfu's natural beauty is another major draw for visitors. The island is known for its lush green landscapes, olive groves, and stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters. Some of the most popular beaches include Paleokastritsa, Glyfada, and Sidari, each offering a unique charm and a range of activities from sunbathing to water sports. Inland, the island is dotted with traditional villages, where visitors can experience local customs and hospitality. In addition to its natural and architectural beauty, Corfu has a vibrant cultural scene. The island hosts various festivals and events throughout the year, celebrating everything from music and dance to religious traditions. The Corfu Easter celebrations are particularly famous, featuring processions, music, and the unique custom of "botides," where clay pots are thrown from balconies to mark the resurrection of Christ. This blend of tradition and festivity provides a lively atmosphere for both locals and tourists. Corfu's cuisine is another highlight, influenced by its multicultural history. Traditional dishes often feature fresh seafood, locally grown vegetables, and olive oil. Some local specialties include "pastitsada" (a spicy meat stew with pasta), "sofrito" (veal in white wine and garlic sauce), and "bourdeto" (a spicy fish stew). The island's vineyards produce notable wines, and local olive oil is highly prized. Dining in Corfu offers a delightful exploration of flavours and culinary traditions, making it a paradise for food enthusiasts. Accommodation is an important decision to make prior to planning your route but our firm suggestion is to stay somewhere in the northern part of the island. We chose to stay in Pyramid City Appartments - a budget friendly accommodation is the North-East side with great views to the Albanian coast but very poor connections. The roads can get very narrow in this side of the isle therefore if you're not comfortable driving in other countries and with rental cars you're better off staying near Paleokastritsa with very good connections but less relax.
