The Kootenay region is a haven for anyone seeking recreation and relaxation, who wants something a tad quieter than Banff and Canmore. Located just West of the Southern Canadian Rockies, the Kootenays have charming small towns, jaw-dropping landscapes, friendly people, a relaxed energy and more trails than one could possible explore in a lifetime. As a local who lives here, and has travelled throughout the East and West Kootenays, there are so many incredible places/things/spots/shops in this region that deserve the same hype as their Alberta mountain town neighbours. The Kootenay's are just as cool (but quieter and more affordable)! Nestled on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino and Ucluelet are full of active wildlife, rugged and raw coastal beauty, jaw dropping nature, laid back surfing vibes, and of course pure relaxation. If you're planning a trip to explore this part of the beautiful Island, you're in for a treat! Making the 6-hour road trip from Victoria a few times a year, I have put together a list of everything you shouldn't miss while in these towns.
