The Ultimate Local's Guide to the Kootenays
EAST OR WEST
The Kootenay region is massive, and even though it attracts tourists, it remains surprisingly chill and quiet. Picture tons of small towns with killer trails and skiing that can give Canmore a run for its money but won't break the bank. Lakes everywhere, outdoor activities galore, and views that'll make your jaw drop. Locals? Super friendly. Coffee? Good. Food? Great. Basically, your only tough choice is whether to stick to the East, head West, or go all out and do a big loop of both.
East Kootenay
The East Kootenays are all about that rugged charm. Tucked between the strong Purcells and mighty Rockies, you've got these adventure-packed mountain towns scattered through the valley. The lakes might be a bit colder, but the alpine glow more than makes up for it.
West Kootenays
The West Kootenays take on a slightly more artistic and hippie vibe. There is still great skiing, fantastic trails and cute towns, but on this side of the Purcell's there is a bit more of a relaxed coastal vibe, no doubt because many of the towns are situated right on the shore of Kootenay Lake or it's surrounding rivers.
