"A glacier-capped volcano. Black- and golden-sand beaches. Dramatic cliffs. Hidden waterfalls. Lava-tube caves. Moss-covered lava fields. Striking rock formations. Volcanic craters. You're entering Snæfellsjökull National Park. The park, which covers the western tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, wasn't created until 2001. It's named, obviously, after the volcano (last eruption around 200 AD) that towers over the park and can be seen all the way from Reykjavík on a clear day. Activities abound: caving, drives, hikes, ice climbing, tours (helicopter, Jeep, snowcat), and whale-watching trips. Just don't try to make this a day trip from Reykjavík. There's way too much to see and do--especially during the midnight sun--out here."
"Snæfellsjökull National Park, located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland, is centered around the Snæfellsjökull volcano and glacier, famously featured in Jules Verne's novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth." The park encompasses a diverse range of landscapes, including lava fields, caves, waterfalls, and coastal cliffs, providing a haven for wildlife and numerous outdoor activities such as hiking, bird watching, and glacier tours.
