Two week guide to Japan: Osaka->Kyoto->Tokyo

This itinerary is designed to hit the major highlights of Japan and visits the top three cities of Japan for first time visitors. To get the most out of your travel time I suggest flying into Osaka and out of Tokyo. You can also of course flip this itinerary around and start in Tokyo and end in Osaka. 

This trip only has you riding the Shinkansen (the bullet train) one time, between Kyoto and Tokyo, and thus does not require you to purchase a JR Rail pass.

2 Weeks in Japan: Osaka, Kyoto & Tokyo

Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is an eclectic city, an incredible mix of imperial palaces, sanctuaries, temples, but also cutting-edge neighborhoods full of huge skyscrapers and gigantic video.
Many of Tokyo's neighborhoods are like small cities, each with a different character: for example Shibuya is the district of young people, Akihabara of manga and electronics, Asakusa with its ancient temples and Ginza of luxury. Often you just need to get on the metro and get off at the next stop to see something completely different.

Around 510 cherry trees bloom in the park from mid-March to early April. The blossoms provide a stunning backdrop to the nearby Tokyo Skytree. After dark, the tunnel of cherry blossoms is lit up from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This riverside park with coffee shops & a playground is a popular place to view the cherry blossoms.
