What people say

"Located in the centre of Funchal, in the historic centre of Santa Maria, the Mercado dos Lavradores is one of the landmarks that the capital of Madeira has to offer to those who visit it and, of course, to the entire population, where colours, aromas and tradition come together to delight and delight those who come to visit. It was built in the 1930s, according to a design by Edmundo Tavares (1892-1983), in a graceful combination of art deco and modernism. In this market, you can find the best that the island has to offer: the freshest and most exotic fruits, vegetables and the exuberant flowers of the “garden of the Atlantic”, as the beautiful island of Madeira is often called. The market has a covered area made up of two floors, with the lower floor selling fish and meat, while the upper floor sells tropical fruits, vegetables and many spices, filling the entire space with new aromas. Decorating the main entrance and also inside, there are several tile panels produced in the once famous Fábrica da Loiça de Sacavém, in Lisbon, now defunct. Another of the most charming features of this Farmers' Market is the tradition and folklore that still survives, and you can find many vendors dressed in typical Madeiran costumes, full of bright colours, joy and typicality."

"A great place to see, but I was warned by a local guide that the prices for fruit here are pretty outrageous for tourists"
