"The castle is widely believed to have been constructed in 1804 by Ali Pasha of Ioannina, a powerful Albanian ruler who governed as an almost independent Ottoman pasha. However, some sources suggest that Ali Pasha may have simply restored an older fortification, possibly of Venetian origin. According to legend, French military engineers assisted in building the castle, only to be executed by Ali Pasha upon its completion.
The castle was originally built on an island in Porto Palermo Bay, an area historically known as "Panorma Bay" and used as an anchorage since antiquity. The island was initially separated from the mainland by about 30 meters, but a narrow isthmus was later constructed to connect the two, making access easier. Porto Palermo Castle features a triangular layout with large bastions at each corner, designed to house a garrison. One of the bastions in the northeast even served as a prison. The castle continued to be used actively during World War II and throughout Albania's communist era.
Today, visitors can explore Porto Palermo Castle for a small fee. The interior is a labyrinth of rooms and hallways, offering an intriguing experience for those who enjoy historical sites. Just north of the castle, along the bay shore, lies the abandoned Porto Palermo Tunnel, a former submarine base from Albania's communist period in the 1960s and 1980s. Both the castle and the tunnel are fascinating remnants of Albania's rich and complex history, making them must-see attractions in the area."

"Porto Palermo is a castle situated in the Porto Palermo Bay. The fort served as former Soviet submarine base during the communist regime in Albania. It's a great stop to stretch your legs and learn more about the history of the region. As it is on a bay, there are some great beaches to explore as well."
