"Known as St. Mary of the Garden, this church was built after a man saw a beautiful painting of Mary in a garden (this area was almost completely covered in vegetable gardens) and vowed if he was cured of his sickness, he would have a lamp lit perpetually in front of her image.
It is also the national church of Japan in Rome. In 1585, a delegation from Japan visited the church shortly before getting into a dangerous situation on the Tiber. They prayed to Our Lady–whose image they had just prayed in front of–and were saved. "

"Unassuming exterior but intricate art inside. It’s called “of the garden” because there are tomatoes, grapes and more in the details of the decor! "

"Chiesa Santa Maria dell'Orto is another must see church with an overwhelmingly beautiful interior"
