Rome off the beaten path: church edition

Rome off the beaten path: church edition

Sometimes the most striking spots aren't the most popular ones! I've rounded up a few of my favorite churches in Rome beyond St. Peter's Basilica! Most of these are free entry and uncrowded. I've included what each is known for, what to look for, or the biggest piece of art in the church.

Making the most of this guide

This guide doesn't go deep into detail on each church's history. I find that many of these are stunningly beautiful, even if you don't know the history of each building. Plus, unless you're a historian, the facts and figures can run together if you see several in a morning. But the beauty of each place stands out!

If you're interested in more details, definitely consider doing a guided tour!

You can also check websites like Wikipedia or the one below for more background on each church - they give good summaries with the option to get more of the nitty gritty, as much as you're interested!

Most of these churches are free entry, although some of those may change during the 2025 Jubilee year. Additionally, some have additional areas (underground crypts, for example) that charge a small entry fee. You'll need cash for these entry fees.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Amateur Italian, travel advisor, and adventurous eater! I’m a travel creative living in small town northern Italy, and I've been planning travel for over 15 years. I've lived on three continents and visited over 40 countries, so I'm passionate about helping travelers experience the best of a location, no matter where! I love both/and travel: I want to see the big sights AND the local hangouts, the big cities AND the small towns. I’d love to help you do it too! If you’re going to Rome for the first time, you don’t need me to tell you to see the Colosseum. But you might want me to tell you if it’s better as a guided tour or on your own, what add-on’s are worth the money, and what are the extra secret things your ticket can get you! My favorite part of travel is eating well: finding the local haunts, tasting a new wine, and trying the local dishes. Amazing food doesn't have to be expensive: sometimes the best of a place is in the street food! But if it is a splurge, I'll make sure it's worth every penny. I'd love to work with you to create the trip of your dreams!
