"The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon is a striking hilltop church built between 1872 and 1884, combining Romanesque and Byzantine architectural styles.
Dominating the skyline from the Fourvière Hill, it was constructed to honor the Virgin Mary, who is believed to have protected Lyon from the bubonic plague, war, and siege.
Its grand towers and intricate mosaics characterize the basilica's exterior, while the interior boasts stunning stained glass, detailed mosaics, and marble sculptures.
It serves as a significant pilgrimage site, particularly during the annual Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights) in December.
The basilica offers panoramic views of Lyon from its terraces, making it both a spiritual and tourist landmark that symbolizes the city's devotion and resilience. "

"This is a stunning basilica overlooking the city of Lyon from the top of Fourviere hill. The church, finished in 1884, was built to thank the Virgin Mary for sparing the city during the Franco-Prussian war. If you are planning on visiting the basilica and the remains of the old theater, I recommend taking the funicular to the theater first. The lines are much less crowded, and then you can easily walk to the church from the theater. "
