What people say

"The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon is a striking hilltop church built between 1872 and 1884, combining Romanesque and Byzantine architectural styles. Dominating the skyline from the Fourvière Hill, it was constructed to honor the Virgin Mary, who is believed to have protected Lyon from the bubonic plague, war, and siege. Its grand towers and intricate mosaics characterize the basilica's exterior, while the interior boasts stunning stained glass, detailed mosaics, and marble sculptures. It serves as a significant pilgrimage site, particularly during the annual Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights) in December. The basilica offers panoramic views of Lyon from its terraces, making it both a spiritual and tourist landmark that symbolizes the city's devotion and resilience. "
"Ascend to the esplanade for a panoramic view that will leave you spellbound, offering a sweeping vista that encompasses the entirety of Lyon. From this elevated vantage point, soak in the awe-inspiring landscape that unfolds before you. If you want to explore the basilica's rooftop: check out their website for Saturday visits. Otherwise, the Lyon City Card grants access to an exclusive tour of the basilica's rooftops, providing a unique perspective of this architectural marvel. Traverse the heights and marvel at the intricate details of the basilica's design, enhancing your visit with an unforgettable experience."
"This is a stunning basilica overlooking the city of Lyon from the top of Fourviere hill. The church, finished in 1884, was built to thank the Virgin Mary for sparing the city during the Franco-Prussian war. If you are planning on visiting the basilica and the remains of the old theater, I recommend taking the funicular to the theater first. The lines are much less crowded, and then you can easily walk to the church from the theater. "

Nestled in the heart of France, Lyon is known as the country's culinary capital. This city brims with life and a wealth of attractions waiting to be explored. While it ranks among France's most significant urban centers, two days are often sufficient to take in its many offerings. Lyon's unique charm stems from being traversed by two winding rivers, which bestow upon it a distinct allure. Multiple bridges gracefully connect the city's three main districts: the historic Old Town (Vieux Lyon), the peninsula known as Presqu'île, and the riverbanks on the right bank of the Rhône. For a short stay, it's advisable to choose accommodations as centrally located as possible, ensuring easy access to the city's primary points of interest. While Lyon is mostly walkable, do keep in mind that it encompasses several hilly areas, particularly the Fourvière Hill. For those less inclined to undertake the uphill journey on foot, there's a cable car service available to ascend the heights. Should you wish to extend your journey, Lyon harmoniously pairs with other destinations such as Paris, Dijon (and the Burgundy region), Geneva, and Annecy. Dive into this vibrant city where culinary expertise meets rich heritage, this city is a captivating blend of historical landmarks, vibrant neighborhoods, and a thriving cultural scene.
