A Mini Guide to Lyon
A bit of background
History
Lyon is the third largest city in France, after Paris and Marseille. It's located at the intersection of two rivers, the Rhône and the Saône, meaning a large portion of the city is located on the "presqu'île" (almost island).
The city was founded by the Romans in the first century B.C.E. The city was first a military colony for the Romans called Lugdunum (you can still see remnants of this colony).
The renaissance treated Lyon well. It's two rivers, as well as its proximity to Italy, meant many merchants passed through the city and trade flourished. Both printing and silk-production flourished. Vieux Lyon is the perfect place to transport yourself back to this era!
Geography
The city is just northwest of the french alps in a region called Auvergne-Rhône-Alps. The region is known for its great hiking (it's very close to the French city Annecy and Switzerland).
