The traboules of Lyon are narrow, covered passageways that traverse buildings and link streets, primarily in the Vieux Lyon and Croix-Rousse districts. Originating from the Latin "transambulare," meaning "to pass through," they date back to the 4th century, influenced by Roman aqueducts.

Flourishing during the Renaissance, these passageways facilitated the transport of delicate silk by Canuts (silk workers), protecting it from the elements and efficiently connecting workshops to the Saône River. 

During World War II, the French Resistance used traboules to evade German troops, leveraging their labyrinthine structure for covert operations.

Architecturally, traboules feature vaulted ceilings, spiral staircases, and Renaissance elements, often opening into ornate courtyards with wells or fountains.

Today, they are celebrated for their historical significance and architectural charm, serving as a symbol of Lyon's cultural identity and resilience,  preserved as a vital part of the city’s heritage.
