Japan contrasts: 21-day itinerary

Japan is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations. There are many itineraries for 15-20 days that cover major stops such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka... In this article, I write about the destinations that I liked the most out of the ordinary routes.
Historical cities, mountains, sea, good food... a bit of everything.

Japan out of ordinary route

First time visiting Japan, but looking for an itinerary beyond the Golden Triangle [Tokyo, Kyoto, & Osaka]? This itinerary efficiently combines these cities with smaller traditional villages, serene gardens, the magical nature of the Nagano and Wakayama Prefectures, and small islands. The itinerary is designed for a time span of two weeks onwards. Covering all places in two weeks, like we did, results in a packed planning. By stretching the time span, one can personalize the itinerary; while one person might decide to spend some additional time on Naoshima, others will prefer to book an additional night in the city of Osaka. 

Next to the diverse palette of places, this itinerary includes plenty of recommendations for tearooms, restaurants, and hotels.

Itsukushima

Miyajima, also known as Itsukushima, is an island steeped in spiritual significance. Its iconic torii gate seems to float on water during high tide, creating a surreal scene at Itsukushima Shrine. With a peaceful atmosphere and native deer roaming freely, Miyajima offers a serene escape from urban life.

Located on the island of Miyajima, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Japan's most iconic landmarks. Take a ferry from Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima Island, enjoying the scenic views along the way.
