2 Days in Hiroshima, Japan 🇯🇵

While trying to avoid crowds, we stumbled into the  most fabulous and unique soy sauce shop. They had so many different flavors and combinations you wouldn't expect but they all taste delicious. There are sampler bottles so you can try everything before you buy. 

As soon as you get off the ferry, you'll see wild deer freely roaming and interacting with tourists. Be careful with your food and belongings, they'll munch on anything. Don't LITTER! Take your trash with you. You usually can find a trash can near a vending machine. 

The first landmark of Miyajima Island is the Itsukushima. Plan a full day on the island so you can see it during low and high tide. 

If you walk around the small streets, you'll find multiple ways to get to the Gojunoto. If you see a crowded area, try the other side. There's a bunch of "secret" picture spots. 

The line for the cable cars moves pretty quickly. The signs said it would take an hour from where we entered the line but it was more like 35-40 minutes. The views and monuments at the top are definitely worth the wait. It's about a 2-hour hike to climb up if you choose not to take the cable car. 

If it's really busy when you get to the island, walk away from the shops and into the park and you'll find calmer deer and a more serene atmosphere. 

A MUST-TRY in Hiroshima is Okonomiyaki. You'll see shops selling it all over. It's a savory pancake layered with egg, noodles, cabbage, onions, meat or seafood and a variety of other toppings you can choose from. I suggest trying a seafood one or asking the chef for their specialty. 

Ron from Okonomiyaki Ron is SUPER knowledgable and speaks excellent English since he was raised in Los Angeles & Japan. 

🔴 Make sure to have some cash. Most places in Fukuoka accept Visa or Suica cards, but a few of the more mom-and-pop shops only accept cash. 

🔴  When taking public transportation, look down and on the walls to make sure you are walking on the correct side. 

🔴  Sometimes Apple Maps can work better for directions. 

🔴 If you are in public and looking for a trash can, look for a vending machine. There's usually one near them.

🔴 It's rude to walk and eat. If you get street food, eat it in front of the business.  

Download the Suica App for the subway and buses. Most rides were 210¥.

Depending on where else in Japan you are traveling to, it might make sense to get a JR pass. Make sure to calculate the cost without it, because in some situations it's cheaper to just by each ride instead of the pass.

At some point (and probably a few times) during your trip, stop at a Lawson and/or 7-11 and grab some snacks like onigiri, smoothies, deserts, chicken katsu, drinks, or even full meals. Try something you normally wouldn't try and also get the spicy rice crackers and a smoothie (the machine is sooooo cool!). 

On Miyajima Island, be sure to try oysters and Momijimanju from the stalls
