Trekking across Iceland in 7 Days

Iceland is a beautiful place to visit year-round, with the activities changing depending on the time of year you choose to visit. The warmer months are fun to explore this country because the summer sun creates a never-ending amount of time for adventures, seeing the puffin community, and hitting all the must-sees while not worrying about snow. 

This guide will give you the best places to hit in town and around the island whether you are planning for day trip excursions, road-tripping around Ring Road, or sticking to one section. This is the list of can't-miss things and places while visiting! 

The list below is packed with many options on how to plan for a summer trip to Iceland. First and foremost, you will not be able to see everything on this list if you are going for a week or less, and you will have to make peace with that and get excited to come back. There is so much to do on this island, make sure to give yourself plenty of time for traveling between places and exploring. There are plenty of random pull-offs to explore that might sidetrack from the original plan. Below are tours and activity options to participate in - my suggestion would be to pick 1 or 2 that you are most interested in and make sure to book those.

9 Hikes Off the Beaten Path in Iceland

Heimaey

One of the largest puffin colonies live here. To reach the islands you will need to take a ferry from the mainland. During the summer months the ferry leaves from Landeyjahöfn, a harbor located along the south of Iceland and is an hour and 45-minute drive from Reykjavik. The ferry ride over is a little over 30 minutes one way.

In the harbor of Heimaey, you will be able to climb to the top. 

You will find ropes and ladders to help you go up. Just be careful. 

Even if you don't arrive to the top, the views are amazing, just stop and enjoy the sundown. 

Before you go back to the ferry, Have a beer in the restaurant Slippurinn 

This is a very sketchy climb on a rope in very steep sandy conditions. Not for the faint of heart, but very worth. I go more into depth about the approach in my blog post below :)

Book ferry tickets in advance! There is no need to bring a car, everything is walkable or you can rent bikes.
