"Piazza Sant'Oronzo is the fulcrum of city life. In the past it was called "Piazza dei Mercanti" because it was the heart of the commercial life of Lecce. The people of Lecce are very proud of this place both because the flooring is adorned with a mosaic which represents the coat of arms of Lecce, and because the square is named after its Patron Saint. Here you can admire the Column of Sant'Oronzo, a votive column that protects the city from above. The column, almost 30 meters high, is a monument that tells of a dark period in the history of Lecce: that of the plague epidemic. In fact, it is said that, during this terrible plague, only the land of Lecce was spared and that the people of Lecce attributed this miracle to Sant'Oronzo."
