Memorial of the Second Resistance Movement

What people say

"The monument at Klarov in Prague was initiated by the Czech Union of Freedom Fighters (ČSBS) and followed a lengthy process to finalize its design. A public competition was announced in 2003, but no winner emerged. Afterward, a more selective competition involved five artists, and although David Černý initially won, he had disagreements with the ČSBS over interpretations of historical facts, particularly the number of victims during the Nazi occupation. As a result, the second-ranked sculptor, Vladimír Preclík, was chosen to create the memorial. Preclík adapted his earlier design for a memorial to US soldiers in Pilsen, with the American flag as a prominent feature of the monument. The architectural design was handled by Ivan Ruller, with the park concept designed by Zdeněk Sendler. The memorial was unveiled on 25 May 2006, in a ceremony attended by the Mayor of Prague, Pavel Bém, President of the Czech Senate Přemysl Sobotka, Mayor of Prague 1 Vladimír Vihan, and other notable figures."
"A monument to the flag of the Czech Republic. It is dedicated to the second resistance movement to the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia from 1938 to 1945."
