A bit of context

Prague, the captivating capital of the Czech Republic, is a city where history and modernity coexist in a stunning blend. Nestled in the heart of Central Europe, Prague is strategically positioned along the Vltava River, with its picturesque landscape framed by rolling hills and majestic castles. This geographic advantage has made it a significant crossroads of culture and trade throughout its storied past. The city sits at an elevation of about 200 meters above sea level, contributing to its temperate climate, characterized by warm summers and chilly winters.

The earliest signs of human habitation in the area trace back to prehistoric times, with the city’s roots deep in the 9th century when it began as a fortified settlement. Over the centuries, Prague evolved into an influential center in the Holy Roman Empire, especially during the reign of Charles IV in the 14th century, when it became the imperial capital. The remnants of Gothic architecture, including the iconic St. Vitus Cathedral and Charles Bridge, still grace the city, offering visitors a glimpse into its grand past.

Prague’s strategic significance continued through the medieval and Renaissance periods as it flourished as a center of culture and education. The city's name, derived from the Czech word "práh," meaning "threshold," reflects its role as a gateway to the East and West. Historic landmarks like the Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock are testaments to the city’s rich heritage and architectural splendor.
