What people say

"No visit to San Gimignano is complete without a gelato at one of the most famous gelaterie in the world, located in the very central and usually very busy Piazza della Cisterna. You’ll recognize it by the long line out the door, but don’t worry, the staff behind the counter works quickly, and you’ll be out the door in no time… ready to line up for a second round. Stop at Gelateria Dondoli for a tasty gelato of unusual flavors like their Vernaccia wine sorbet or one of their registered flavors, like “Crema di Santa Fina”, an eggy gelato with pine nuts and saffron, or “Champelmo”, with grapefruit and sparkling wine. The Italian custom is to always have at least 2 flavors, so enjoy mixing and feel free to ask the gelatieri for recommended combinations. Sergio won in 2016 the prestigious MAM (Maestro d’Arte e Mestiere) prize, the same prize called “Living National Treasure” in Japan, and “Maître d’Art” in France. Just 75 Masters have received this prize in Italy, and Sergio is the only gelato maker to have obtained it. If you prefer a more hands-on approach to your gelato, I recommend signing up for a Dondoli Gelato Class with the Maestro himself: Sergio Dondoli, a man larger than life, with a marvelous set of whiskers, and a peculiar attention to detail, as you’ll notice by his perfectly color-coordinated apron, hat, and Havaianas glasses in the very same shade of purple as his gelato cups. The class lasts about two hours, during which you’ll learn how to make gelato with fresh and organic ingredients, all about its history, and how it differs from ice cream. You’ll eat more gelato than you can dream of, but you’ll burn off the calories in laughter thanks to Dondoli’s great sense of humor. See attached link for information about the Gelato Class. Closed for winter break for the month of January 2023. "

"Prize winning gelato! Sergio has trained the Italian pastry team for the pastry Olympics in Lyon, France. His flavors are so creative and the quality TOP! it's worth the wait in line. He also has a gelato school now , just down the street, that must be reserved. "
"Jessi and Allesio say this is the best gelato in the world...try flavor Crema di Santa Fina (saffron) and Pistachio (pronounced with double K instead of a cc, as in Pinocchio). "
